We stayed in the Minerva three years ago and really, really loved it--our room had a breathtaking view of the bay and they have a tiny pool that I enjoyed thoroughly after our day trips to Pompeii and Herculaneum. But--it's a ways from the main square. We took a taxi there and back; you could walk, though, particularly there, since it's downhill (I'm guessing it would be a 15 or 20 minute walk).

Stayed at La Tonnarella two years ago. It's an easy walk to the square. I thought La Tonn. needed some TLC, but others have loved it. Very pretty patios and a great view, dingy furniture and moldy shower curtain.

I liked the Grand Hotel Riviera, especially if you ask for and get a front room overlooking the outstanding views. We had one with a wraparound porch that you had to pry me away from. It is spotless and is popular with the British, I would stay there anytime.

La Tonnarella has been closed most of February for renovations.

Is Hotel Minerva noise because it's on the main road?

I didn't find the Minerva noisy at all. And loved the rooftop pool too. I also enjoyed the walk to town. The scenery is just so spectacular.

Also stayed at Minerva two years ago and loved it. The staff was wonderful, rooms very comfortable and nicely furnished- view spectacular. It was not noisy at all. It is a ways from the main square, but we are in our fifties and had no trouble walking to it every day. Besides, then there is no guilt over eating all the wonderful food!
