The bus starts from in from of the Sorrento train station. You buy your tickets in any bar. You probably only have time to go to either Positano or Amalfi and back in half a day but you'll see wonderful views of the coast from the bus. Try to get to the bus early to get the front seats for the best views. I only went to Ravello so I can't comment on shopping in either Positano or Amalfi. You won't have time to get to Ravello and back in half a day.

Positano is stunningly beautiful with houses cascading down the mountain. There are alot of boutique style clothing shops. My sister and I had fun looking around for a few hours. There was a great deli on via dei Mulini.

Hi 888 - The sceduled journey time Sorrento-Positano by bus is 45 mins.

Get off at Sponda stop (- NOT Bar Internazionale/ Chiesa Nuova).

Sponda is within easy walking distance of the centre (- 3 mins).

If you only have half a day, you don't have time for Amalfi
(- that takes 90 mins each way).

Positano is your only choice, it's by far the best of the towns in the area for a half day. In the Summer, Positano's traffic is one way from the main road winding down East through the village to the bottom of the hill. This is the area where the walk way starts down towards the beach past the Hotel Palazzo Murat. As you have such a short timescale, I'd get off here and walk down, have lunch and walk back up through all the shops on the stairs.

thanks Steve and Lifeman
So a bit confused is Sponda the stop for Postano?

sorry what does (Not Bar Internazionale/Chelsa Nuova} mean ?

Is Positano more scenic than Amalfi?

Positano is much more beautiful than Amalfi. I agree that that with your timescale, you won't have enough time to go to Amalfi in any case.

Sponda is back up the road a little from the centre and I guess that Steve is suggesting that you walk down into the village thro the shops approaching the centre. The Bar Internazionale is the same place as I described.

You will want to return to Positano and stay there for a few days.

8888mom,

Does it matter to you that Positano is steeply uphill and is mainly traveled via staircases?

Amalfi is a much gentler incline.
