The only Italian restaurant in the Spectrum has been Il Fornaio for about eight years. Maitai has voiced that he would prefer not to eat at a chain. I just cannot think of a single restaurant up there that is not a chain...what is the world coming to? I really like Houstons, but oops that's a chain too. Let's wait to hear from Art & Mina.

Calamari, I was in beautiful (cold) SD last night for the Holiday Bowl. Why don't we all go to SD and go to Little Italy? There is a relatively new place called Buon Appetito that my friends were raving about. It will all give us just another reason to miss Italia. What does everyone think? Any excuse to visit "America's Most Beautiful City" is ok in my book.

I'm in SD too and assuming it's a strategically placed night when DH can watch the kids, I'm in. Cristiana, my neighbor, I'm in Jamul. If it's mostly SD folk, there's a fantastic hole in the wall in La Mesa that has some of the best REAL Italian food you'll experience in SoCal--it's called Ciao Bella. The owner, Francesco, is a hoot and would treat us right!

Maitai
That sounds great to me, but I am afraid it may be too far for some to drive unless they are open to booking a room somewhere. Little Italy sounds ideal.

Our last one was at Art's. I didn't know he wasn't feeling well--- get well soon!! We had talked about having another one soon, but it sort of faded away.

I would be interested if it isn't a day I have to work.

Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way.

Someone, please, take the lead, set up a date, time, and place, and ask for RSVP's. Not everyone's going to be able to make it, no matter what.

I loved reading about the SF get together. Sounds like you all had fun, fun, fun. Wish I could have been there.

Happy New Year!!!

Budman, maybe next time? It's interesting to read these "maybe" GTG threads. You are 100% correct -- somebody has to take charge and make a decision on a date and place. Then people can RSVP. Setting the date was the hardest part!

Wren-

Florida had one a year or two ago. Olive Oyl (US board) arranged it in the Tampa Bay area when Joseph from DC was down here with his wife. I have 3 kids so of course, something came that kept me from going. OO said it was a lot of fun and interesting to get together and put faces and names together. Maybe we can try it again.

How many are in San Diego? How many would travel to get to SD? Let's start there.

San Diego's too far for me (I'm in the San Fernando Valley). But, my feelings won't be hurt if that's what you decide. Have fun!

Unfortunately, San Diego is also too far for me. I'm in Los Angeles, and would attend an event if it were closer.

I'm also in L.A., but would be happy to drive to San Diego. Tracy and I love to go down there and would make a weekend of it.

Perhaps we should try to set a later date. (maybe early Spring). People might be partied out after the holidays and more willing to go a little extra distance when they get their second wind. As for me, if there is wine, I'll be there.

well, i have always loved the travel advice coming from this board and i also live in san diego county, so i would attend if it works out. san diego has some fairly good places to eat and i bet the food would be secondary to the "talk" anyway.

I attended the GTG at the Disney complex last year and it was great fun. Laguna Beach was mentioned several times and my office is in Laguna Beach. There is a great restaurant named "Cedar Creek" that is not a chain, and serves a variety of foods. They have an area that is separated from the rest of the restaurant that would lend itself to a group. If Laguna Beach doesn't suit, there is also a Cedar Creek in San Juan Capistrano, very c;pse to the 5 Freeway.

I second Cedar Creek in either Laguna or San Juan Cap., that way the LA'ers can still drive home that day.

Some of us can meet in LA and then car pool down to the GTG if that would be easier for some of you in LA. I can drive a little group.

Cedar Creek is a great suggestion. The one in San Juan Capistrano is very close off I-5 and has plenty of free parking. It's also walking distance from the Amtrak station if anyone would like to do the train from either LA or San Diego and points in-between. Last weekend in March sound good? I'm looking forward to meeting travel-loving Fodorites!

I think San Juan Capistrano is a great idea--it's easy to get to on the train or freeway.
