Sicily for One Week --Advice Please

This will be our first trip to Sicily and unfortunately we have only one week to spend. We wanted to base ourselves in just one place and do day trips driving to various sights and attractions. We'd prefer to rent an apartment or stay in a B&B. So which town or area would you recommend as a base to get the most out of our relatively short stay?
Mille grazie in advance for any advice or tips you could offer.

If you are only going to be there one week and want to base yourselves in one city then decide on either the west coast(Palermo,Trapani, etc.) or the east coast(Siracusa,Taormina,Aeolian Islands, etc.) You really cannot do daytrips to the whole island from one spot. When are you going and what things are you interested in?

I completely agree: or east or west, not possible both in one week in one place.
And, overall, having you a car.
So, if you will decide for west, I suggest you Trapani, better than the crowded Palermo (and Palermo is one of your day trips).

In the center, I suggest you B&B AI LUMI in the main street of Trapani: charming rooms, also with a kitchen corner and very good restaurant (wine bar also).
From Trapani, interestig day trips to: Segesta, Erice, Mozia, Marsala, and Palermo, of course.

Ciao.

Reply to Dutyfree:
Thanks for the info. Our priority is soaking up the culture, architecture and history, especially the ancient sites. And whatever the island has to offer in terms of natural beauty and vistas as well. Along the way and after touring, some good chow and vino would of course be most welcome, but not the highest priority.
BTW, you can get some sense of our interests and priorities by viewing a slideshow of our recent trip to Argentina in October at:

Ancient Greek achaeological sites are all over the island. Taormina is in NE, Siracusa SE, Argigento S, Segesta and Selinunte in the W.

But more recent architecture is very different west and east. Area in the SW around Siracusa, Noto, Ragusa/Modica are most famous for its Baroque churches, as the area was mostly rebuilt after the big earthquake of 1693.

The Western part of the island has much higher Norman and Moorish influence.

The towns are visually very different between the two halves.
