Sardinia Resorts - Good Value?

Low-priced flights to Alghero have made us take a look at Sardinia for a family vacation. Food, family, Mediterranean & water - looks wonderful!

The Costa Smeralda resorts are absurdly overpriced, but the area is alluring anyway. Any suggestions for resorts with: great swimming, great food, great views and decent value? We'll be travelling at the end of May with both seniors and kids - looking at approx $300 USD/night - not the Cala di Volpe, but nice.

The Sheraton Cervo? Sol Melia? I know there are some knowledgable people about Sardinia on this board - thanks for your help in advance!

Having lived in Florida for many years, I found the Costa Smeralda the most disappointing area of all of Sardinia and Corscia combined. We had a nice lunch in Rotunda -- but felt like we were in Boca Raton -- both due to the plasticized architecture and the American crowd around us. We spend a day driving around and looking, but happily returned to our digs at La Madalena. I'm sure there are some lovely places, but we kept saying, "why would we spend the money to go this far when there are many resorts in Florida much nicer for less money?" Just my opinon however.

Dash: I tend to agree with Patrick. You'll generally find much better value elsewhere on Sardinia, such as the Villasimius/Costa Rey area and Santa Margherita di Pula, both in the south, respectively east and south of Cagliari.

Take a look at the commercial website
www.planisfero.com
It describes numerous good resort properties all over Sardinia, including those in the areas I've noted above.

Dash - how will you be reaching Alghero? We are checking into possibility in getting there. Everything seems either booked or too expensive.

Erik - The cheap flights to Alghero Dash mentions are probably from London (Stansted) with RyanAir.

RyanAir currently have a £1 + tax offer on some dates to Alghero ...

We stayed at the Green sporting club in Alghero in January. It was rated 4*s but was terrible. Smalled cramped dirty rooms. The going rate was $50 per night per person. This was off season however. I suppose it got it's 4 stars because it had a pool and a fitness club in the basement. Flight tickets cost me 30 euro's roundtrip with taxes per person on ryanair. The city of Alghero was beautiful. There is much to see and do, especially if you have a rental car. A lot of history, and a lot of sea and sand as well. Hotels and rental cars are not cheap there, try looking on ryanair's web site. They book hotels much cheaper there.

Have fun, the pricey hotel's aren't that bad when you consider how cheap the flight there is.
