Salthill or Galway City

I have one night in Galway and presently have a reservation at Lawndale B&B in Salthill. Should I be staying in Galway City or is Salthill a nice location?

It depends. Personally I would sdtay in the city as you can just go outside the door and fall back into your hotel. From Salthill you need to get a bus or taxi if it is after the bus hours. If its a nice day in Salthill you can go for a nice walk on the beach but if its rainy I feel it's a bit dreary. There is far more to do in Galway than in Salthill.

I will have a car. How is parking in Galway City? What is College Road like? I have looked at and inquired about rates at a few places on College Road.

It depends on where in Salthill. The B&B I stayed at was all of a 10 minute walk to the city center, not bad and definitely not necessary to take a bus or taxi, unless you have luggage!

College Road is close to the centre of Galway. It's the main road into the city and is lined with houses offering bed and breakfast.

The problem I found is that there are few B&B's right in Galway City.
We did find one of them, "The Grange", which is about three blocks from the main square.
They can show us parking nearby which they say is safe and secure and reasonable, but they have none of their own.
We are going next month, and I can let you know how it is when we return. We wanted to be right in Galway City and not Salthill.

opaldog
We stayed in Salthill and liked it because it was quiet and we could see the water and we were going futher north the next day. If I were just going to be in Galway, I would stay in the city. There is a Jury's hotel right in the heart of downtown that looked really nice and their rates are very reasonable.

I'm still thinking of Galway City vs. Salthill. I have received replies from St. Judes B&B on College Road, Aaron B&B, White House, and Copper Beech B&B. Also does anyone know where Beach Court in Salthill is? It says 1 km from city centre.

Hi opaldog,
We stayed at Lawndale last June. The walk to the city center would not have been too bad if the weather had been dry. Unfortunately, the 2 days we spent in Galway were both rainy, and I would surely have rather stayed in town. The B&B itself was okay, but rather worn around the edges. Next time we go, I think we'll stay at the Jury's Inn. That location can't be beat,IMHO.

Flaneuse: When you say Lawndale was okay and worn around the edges, could you give a little more info. Was it clean? Were the beds comfortable? How was the owner, was she welcoming? Did they have hairdryers? Was the walk over 15, 20 minutes. Thanks

My cousin & I enjoyed our stay at Lawndale in May 2001. It is not brand new, but it was clean, had comfortable beds, the owner was very nice, and the breakfast was good. We stayed in a front room with a lovely view of the bay. There was a hairdryer. I would say the walk to town was 15 minutes by either the busy streets or the route I preferred along the seaside. (We had good weather and no car.) Only criticism: we did not find a handy place to have a pint nearby. We are trying a place on College Rd next month. I hope it is worth the extra cost! Try this map -- you can zoom in and find Beach Court, College Rd, Eyre Sq, etc.
www.softguides.com/ireland/maps/galwaycity.html
