Salerno to Positano

We got married in Feb. and are in the final planning stages for our honeymoon in Italy next month - while we've both been to cities in the north, it's the first time to the Amalfi Coast for both of us.

I've read some of the previous threads (like the "Naples to Positano" post) - thanks so much to all for the advice there -- it does seem like Salerno is a better departure point at this time of year. Our dates for this leg of the trip are May 16 (train down from Rome) thru May 23 (train up to Florence).

A couple of additional questions: (1) Are there any direct buses from Salerno to Positano? (hard to tell from the SITA timetable but it seems like you have to change in Amalfi). (2) What are the prices like for a hired car from Salerno-Positano? (please advise if the price is per person or per car). Any recommendations on reputable companies?

Thanks very much in advance!

Hi Rmw - Salerno-Positano is much better by boat than by bus.

Boat takes 70 mins.

Bus takes 2hrs++ and requires a change at Amalfi.

There is no point in taking a limo/taxi from Salerno to Positano. If you plan to take a limo it makes more sense to arrange it from Naples. Same price as from Salerno (- € 100, give or take) - and knocks an hour off the journey.

Hope this helps ...

Thanks so much Steve and Ira! We had been a bit concerned that mid-May would be too early for the ferries - but definitely would prefer to see the coast by boat.

We will also be going to Positano from Rome on May 16. I was first thinking about getting there via Naples, but then I realized that it would be low season for their boat service:
http://www.metrodelmare.com/inglese/...ARI_BASSA.html

So then I read about the Salerno option, which sounds less complicated for this time of year. Salerno is also smaller and probably easier to deal with. The only thing I'm wondering about is whether all the boat departure times listed on the Salerno website below will be in effect for mid-May 2007:
http://www.salernocity.com/comune/tr...i/costiera.asp

The schedule is dated 2006, but from other posts I've read, it seems that the schedule doesn't change much. I'd just like to make sure! Does anyone know about whether this Salerno boat schedule will be in effect for mid-May?

[mmw555: Maybe we'll bump into you!]

Thanks, Vicki

Yay!! -- I just called the ticket office for the Salerno boat service, 011-39-089/227979. They said that the full boat schedule is already in effect. So this schedule is good for mid-May through the summer:

Again, -- YAY!! Thx, Vicki

Hi Robyn,

On the 16th, we'll probably take the 9:45a (faster) train from Rome to Salerno -- only other real choice in the am is 7:45a, which is a bit early. Then the 2:10 boat from Salerno, staying for 2 nights. Two tall skinny people, me with long blondish hair, my husband with salt & pepper curly hair and beard.

It would be fun to bump into you! Best, Vicki
