Train Info and Amalfi Coast
Hi,
I'm going from Rome to Positano. I'm looking @ different options. I can go to Naples and take the ferry to Positano. Go to Salerno to Positano or Sorrento to Positano. I need to also return to Rome from Positano. What's the best way to handle this?
Thanks Tom

Hi TK,
Assuming that you don't want to pay about 100E for a limo from Naples to Positano,
I would train to Salerno and take the ferry to Positano. The ferry is about 3 blks SE of the train station.
The ride is very pleasant and you don't have to bother with schlepping luggage on the Circumvesuviana.
You can also take the SITA bus from the Salerno train station to Positano.

Tom - The Naples-Positano service is a HYDROFOIL service (- there are no ferries on this route).
There are 2 DIRECT hydrofoils daily in summer, departing Napoli Beverello dock at 08.45 and 13.40.
Fare: approx. € 9
Journey time: 1 hr.
www.metrodelmare.com
[You can get to Napoli Beverello dock by bus 3S or tram No. 1 (- or taxi) from opposite Naples station - across Piazza Garibaldi].
The return Positano-Naples express hydrofoil service has departures from Positano normally at 12.15 and 17.40 (- check locally to confirm).
Another option from Rome to Positano is the DIRECT bus (- June-Sept only) run by Marozzi:
Dep. 07.00 Rome Tiburtina
Arr. 11.30 Positano
Fare: approx. € 19
www.marozzivt.it
[The return service Positano-Rome leaves Positano approx. 16.15
- arriving Rome Tib 20.30]
Hope this helps ...

Ira,
We are taking your advise and taking to a train from Rome to Salerno and then ferry to Positano. Looked at schedule you sent. Is it necessary to make reservations for the ferry if we will be travelling the second weekend of October?

Cindi, I don't know what Ira sent you, but was it the timetable info at www.metrodelmare.com? (Click on "English" and then "Routes.")
Look at the routes colored red and light green. Note that this ferry service operates seasonally only to the end of the day 10/15/06. No reservations, but if you have a gap of time between arrival in Salerno and departure for Positano, buy your tickets first and then wander around.

We just did the Rome to Salerno to Amalfi coast thing this year. I only add this post to confuse you further. We took the Sita bus from the Salerna Train Station....about 25 feet outside the main door.....it says Amalfi on the front of the Bus.
We really enjoyed the bus ride because most of the time we were hanging over the edge....the views were fantastic.
Either way it is a great trip.

In May, the hydrofoil service to Positano was suspended because of work on the dock in Positano. It looked like the work was going at a typical Italian pace while we were there so it may not have been finished as of yet.
The closure wasn't posted on the Metrodelmare site so I'd be sure that it was running before making plans to take it.

We did the Rome to Naples by train, Naples to Sorrento by Circumvesuviana, then Sorrento to Positano by bus. I don't recommend it with luggage. Train to Salerno, then take a ferry or bus to Positano (ferry was more fun to me than the bus). We had a private driver from Positano to Naples because I didn't want to miss our early morning flight, and it was way better than how we got there, but as a previous post stated, its around 100 euros.
