Rome/Sorrento
In the beginning stages of planning trip to Rome--my sister and I have agreed that we need to revisit and stay longer. She also wants to go to Pompeii, so I was thinking that we could stay a few days in Sorrento before taking train to Rome. If we do this, I will have to fly from SF to Heathrow (mileage on Virgin) overnight and then we will fly to Naples I assume. Preliminary question should we plan on staying in Naples that night or press on to Sorrento-- since I figure I will be toast by the time I get to Naples; 10 hour flight to London, transfer time to Gatwick and then flight to Naples.

Many people neglect Naples and just apprehensively pass thru - while i'm not saying to stay here as Sorrento is more pleasant, Naples is much and wrongly maligned from my experience and what i've been reading. In many ways it's an old-style Italian town, with narrow lanes with laundry strung between windows - like all Italian towns used to be when i first visited Italy starting in 1969. The old-world charm (and some grime) is still here. Lots of neat sights too. But there are certain areas i went thru with a bit of trepidation, perhaps falsely honed by things i'd read that perhaps weren't true. The train station area is especially seedy.

Thanks, Ira. We may end up flying into Rome and renting a car and driving down to Sorrento, after we stay with a friend in London overnight--still exploring different possibilities and logistics. Flying in and out of Rome to London gives us more flight options and may be less complicated.

After that long of a schlep, your brains (assuming that they're even functioning at all) are going to be running on auto-pilot. If you can take the bus from Naples airport to Sorrento like Ira suggests, by all means go to Sorrento to start. If you can't take the bus or get a limo, and would have to take the Circumvesuviana instead, I'd spend the night in Naples. Dealing with Napoli Centrale train station and/or the Circumvesuviana when you only have three functioning brain cells is not a good idea.

Press on to Sorrento. I find Naples very intense. I think you need to be rested to enjoy it. I'd visit Naples later in the week. If you have a group it might be worth your while hiring a driver from Naples to Sorrento. It should cost about 130 E.
