I have already gotten some great Rome hotel information from a previous post that I put on this site. My Mom and I are traveling to Italy in mid March. It is the first trip there for both of us and we went to be centrally located and would prefer to walk to everything.
I was wondering if any of you could take a look at the rates I have been offered at several hotels and tell me what you think about the value we will get for the amount spent? They are all within our price range and are in the general area that we want to stay. I'm just wondering if any really stand out as a good deal or a not so good deal considering what the hotel offers. For the value, I am hoping to find a somewhat quiet location, nice staff, nice/clean room and bathroom, good breakfast and some overall "charm". I am also wondering if the Piazza Navona or Campo de' Fiori areas are pretty similar or if one offers any big advantages over the other in your opinion (i.e. noise at night, etc). I have read all of the reviews on various sights and all these hotels/residenzas look good with mostly positive reviews. But Tthere are always a few that are not so glowing that throw me off.

Hotel Portoghesi - 190 euro standard double

Hotel Adriano - 150 euro standard double,
175 euro superior double (recently refurbished)

Residenza Canali - 207 euros credit card payment / 155 euros cash payment for standard double
233 euros credit card payment / 210 euros cash payment for a room on the top floor with terrace (is a quiet top floor room, with terrace worth the extra money? We will use it if the weather is good.)

Teatro di Pompeo - 170 euro standard double (this has gotten very good reviews, but the rooms on the website don't look that great to me - kind of bare. Am I wrong about the rooms? All other aspects look and sound very good.)

Due Torri - 190 euro standard double (I keep reading about the small rooms. Do other aspects of the hotel make it worth the 190?)

Residenza in Farnese - 180 euro standard double

Does one hotel stand out as the obvious choice to any of you? Any you would cross off my list? Thanks for any help you can give me. I appreciate it.

we are going in May, CVerga, and I was referred to your post, not for an answer, (sorry!) but I am searching too, and within your same budget..hoping to get some good hotel advice.

Daisy58 - Let's hope my post gets some responses! Have you looked into the Albergo Cesari? That would be my first choice, but it was booked. It gets positive reviews and it looks really nice. You might want to look into it for your stay.

If I had to choose from these, it would be the Residenza Farnese hands down. I love the location and the fact that it is in the middle in terms of the prices you give would make it even more attractive. If you decide on it, you might want to skip the breakfast and walk one block to to Campo dei Fiori to the the bakery and bring it back to the hotel (on the east end of the square). It has the best breads/pastries in the city! Their coffee drinks are greeat also.

I stayed at the Due Torri and loved it. The rooms are small but quaint. The staff excellent and so charming here. It is also on a very quiet street. Rome can be noisy. See my pics and review here...

Also, walk up Via Giula (right behind piazza Farnese) toward the Vatican. Many of the pallazi on this charming, pedestrian street were designed by Michelangelo (in addition to everything else, he was also an architect).

Also, I would scratch the Hotel Adriano. It is NOT that central - the rest pretty much are.

Farnese
Due Torri
Portoghesi

Not to make your decision-making any harder, but the Due Torri is the sister hotel of the Fontanella Borghese nearby. The rates are similar, but I liked the F.B.'s location a bit more (about halfway between the Spanish Steps and the river). We've stayed there twice (total of two weeks), and our rooms were very quiet and comfortable. The owner was on-site several days of our stay and was very helpful with suggestions for Rome and other destinations on our itinerary. I've heard very good things about the Portoghesi, but I think I'd still pick the Fontanella Borghese, mostly for its location.

Thank you bardo1, richardab, and bobthenavigator for taking the time to share your thoughts. I appreciate it. I have scratched the Adriano off my list. I noticed no one mentioned anything about the Residenza Canali and the Teatro di Pompeo. Are they not worth the rate or just not worth mentioning in your opinions? They seem to get good reviews, as do the others on my list.

I disagree that the Adriano isn't centrally located. It's right around the corner from the Due Torri, and just down the street from the Spanish Steps. It's a 5 minute walk from P. Navona, and in the other direction, it's even easily walkable to the Vatican area, without actually being in that area. I would definitely stay there again (and wish I had on my last visit to Rome ...). The walls in my room were paper thin, but that's certainly not unique to that hotel. Breakfast was good, staff was very pleasant, room & bathroom were fine.

we are very high on the small, clean, neat, charming Hotel Modigliani on Purificacion near Spanish Steps, Barberini and Via Veneto. Cost about 180E's...staff excellent, breakfast included, excellent, location excellent..not big and brassy...ask for garden view room...check it out, just type in Hotel Modigliani

By the way I have heard that the Portoghesi is also very nice and it is in a great location. If the Due Torri is the same proce I would stay there over the Portoghesi because it is more friendly and quiet.

Type in Residenza Canali in the search field at the top of this page and read the reviews on tripadvisor.com. That hotel has been discussed many, many times in the last few months.

I disagree that the Due Torri is more quiet and friendly than Portoghesi. Actually the little street that is in front of the Due Torri can be a cut-through for motorini during the day and night. We found both hotels friendly. The only positive about the Due Torri vs Portoghesi is the cute, young Italian guy who hangs out of his window talking on his phone - naked. We did enjoy THAT view.....

Residenza Canali and the Teatro di Pompeo also get a lot of positive comments on this board and all of your choices are pretty good. I was just conentrating my comments on what I thought was the best of them (Farnese).

I think people thought they had answered your question on the other thread, I know I did.

Don't stress on it too much, they are all getting recommendations from us so they can't be that bad!

SeaUrchin, the replies on the other post did help me quite a bit. However, I was looking to find out which one might offer better value for the price when I posted this question. As a general rule, I have a problem with sweating the small stuff when it comes to planning because I want everything to be perfect (travel all the way to my kids birthday parties). My husband jokes that I need to find an OCD travel agency or start one myself! He has learned to live with this annoying little short coming of mine.
Anyway, what I have gathered from all of you is that all my choices are good! I do appreciate all of you helping me with this. Not only have you been very helpful but it has made the planning more fun.

If your Mom has trouble climbing several flights of stairs then you might not want to choose Residenza Canali. No elevator.
