Actually, if you read articles about the 9/11 event as well as other terrorist attacks, they don't have anything to do with a specific date being chosen for some significance. A target, yes, I would worry more about a particular target which can be chosen that the date. Terrorists actually did a lot of planning for that, and other bombings, and they chose dates based on logistical considerations, available flights and types of planes, when they were ready, and other types of issues, and even delay or move around the date based on things related to logistics and readiness, not worrying about some particular date.

I could concoct a lot of hypothetical scenarios that could support the idea that it would be less likely to occur on that date than other dates for various reasons.

Thanks for all your thoughts. I asked the same question of some people I know who also work downtown and witnessed the events first hand, and the answers range from "I haven't given it a thought" to "It scared me at first, but I'm over it now" to "Oh, I would definitely rethink travel on that date!" Mind you, these are reasonable, smart, well adjusted people whose opinions I respect. I asked around because I saw the comments here while at work and wondered if my concern was mine alone or if it also affected those who've worked downtown over the past 5 years.

I'm with the last group, for the time being. I'm obviously not afraid to fly as I've been flying all over the world without much thought. I even grumbled at taking the train to DC when National Airport was closed after 9/11, and happily took the first flight into DCA when it became available.

Until I was selecting my flight home for this summer's trip, I never gave dates much thought - it was while selecting July 4 that I reached a stumbling block. I know for me, time will cause all to be a non-factor. Realize, I wasn't fishing for affirmations or justifications of my choice. Knowing there are other NYC metro area posters here, I just wondered aloud at something that bothered me, hence prefacing my question the way it was.

As for "the terrorists winning" I find that phrase rubs me entirely the wrong way. I'm living my life the way I choose to live it, traveling when I choose to travel, in the methods of my choice. Cutting short or extending a vacation by 1 day is not a big deal for me or my family. If you say they won by limiting the days I travel, it's only 2 dates we're talking about. The only thing the terrorists won was at uniting the humans of the world.

So, yes, my question may have been irrational. It may have been silly. But it is what it is right now for me, and it's interesting to see the responses to it.

PS- Budman, I have absolutely no fear of flying on Friday the 13th. I mean, seriously!

After all, what was September 11 before 9/11?
I was sitting in a hotel room in France when I first saw the footage on CNN.
The first thought that crossed my mind was that 911 is the number to call in an emergency in north america.
