Here's a pastry I have not tried yet. If you have read any of my trip reports, that might be shocking. I tend to leave no pastry uneaten in Paris.

Anyway, I am a little obsessed about sampling kouign amann on my next trip to Paris. So where are your favorite spots for this pastry? Is it everywhere and I have just not been paying attention? It took me a few trips to find chouquettes.

By all means share any history and your experiences with kouign amann!

I don´t think that there is bakery in France than doesn´t sell chouquettes; they would be virtually impossible to miss. Kouign amann is much more exclusive and as a specialty from Brittany they are not as ubiquitous as are chouquettes.

One of the most well known places for kouign amann is Maison Georges Larnicol on Saint Germain in the 6th. However, the most amazing kouign amann I have even eaten, and amazing by a large margin above all others, is at L'Auberge du Roi Gradlon at 36 boulevard Arago in the 13th. The food is wonderful, the kouign amann is heavenly.

Georges Larnicol is the only place I've ever had one -- they're small and I sampled two flavors. They were not good - stale, dry, not much taste. So my only advice is to try them elsewhere.

Even though Larnicol makes their kouignettes in Brittany, they don't travel well. If you're really keen on trying a good one, it would be worth the trip to St Brieuc.

Well Sarastro, it took me decades to discover chouquettes.
And I have no idea what a kouign is - I'll look it up some day.

David Lebovitz has a recipe for kouign on his website. When you see what's in them you may not want to eat them! If you are ever in San Francisco, BPatisserie has excellent kouignettes.

Larnicol original place is Concarneau, I think.

Maybe I should have said "discover" instead of "find" regarding chouquettes. I did not know they existed.

They are also at Ble du Sucre in the 12th, a favorite of food bloggers, can't go too far wrong there or at the Patisserie Viennoise in the Latin Qtr.

They are really in a lot of bakeries.

I think I only had one once from somewhere and didn't care for it, but I don't really snack or care for pastries that much. The only one I really like is an almond croissant, more or less, or plain croissants.

I had one at Stroher on Rue Montorgueil and thought that it was good.
