Quick Help - Rome Hotels

Hello everyone,

First, thanks to all who made comments to my previous posts about Amalfi (I was so stupid! I spelled Amalfi wrong --forgive me), Rome, etc.

We are honeymooning in Italy in May 19-29. We will be returning to Rome on May 18 for just one day to fly back to the US after staying in Positano for several days (we will spend the first part of the trip in Rome). I'd like to hear opinions on where to stay for the one night. Near the airport or does it really matter? We're staying at a B&B in Rome for the first 5 nights and then travelling to Positano for the balance of the honeymoon. We have to return to Rome to fly back. Any comments are appreciated..
I neglected to book the final night until now. Please respond promptly Thanks.

Martin

If you're not leaving very early in the morning, then I'd say that you should spend that night in the city and take the train from Roma Termini to the airport. For an early flight, stay near the aiport.

Thanks for the reply SJK -- We will be leaving Rome at 11:20 am. Sorry I didn't tell you when we are leaving. Do you consider that early? How difficult is it to get a decent ride to the airport at that about 7-8 am?

Bob, the Navigator: Read above. Next time have a bit of tolerance for my failure to specify the time. I realize that I didn't give the exact time of our departure. For that I apologize. Why not respond as did SJK, who disregarded my unfortunate mistake and replied in a nice way. If you need additional information, why not ask, "When are you leaving Rome? I would like to give you advice but I would need to know when you are leaving." What happened to congeniality?

Lindenbusch, Bob the Nav didn't criticize you, he merely asked a question. Please don't mistake his directness for a rude demeanor, for he is the least rude individual here.

Now, as to your question, I personally would opt to spend the night in Rome. You can have a lovely dinner, spend a night at a nice hotel, and just enjoy walking around the city. You will be able to see the color of the azaleas on the Spanish Steps and smell the orange blossoms in the breeze...yes, definitely, you have plenty of time to spend the night in the city, and I hope you have a lovely and wonderful and magical honeymoon. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding.

Buon Viaggio,
BC

To give an opposite view, I would say stay as long as you can in Positano in the afternoon and take an evening train from Naples back to Rome. Try to get as late a checkout as you can from your hotel, have a very late lunch and get your last shopping in. There is a train from Naples at 8 pm or so that arrives into Rome at 10:30 pm. (I think there is also one at about 6 pm, check the schedule.) Then take a taxi to the Hilton hotel right at the airport, crash and you can sleep in a bit before your flight. The Hilton has a connecting covered walkway right to the terminals which you can walk in about 5 minutes, if you have a lot of luggage there is also a shuttle bus. Check the price at the Hilton, they may be running offers (sometimes it is expensive, but with travel so down you may get a good offer).

Hilton Rome Airport
Via Arturo Ferrarin, Rome Fiumicino, IT 00050
Tel: 39-06-65258 Fax: 39-06-65256525
Hilton.com

If you stay in Rome the night before instead, as you are departing on a weekday morning, you may run into a little traffic going out to the airport, however you shouldn't have any trouble getting a taxi at that time. Your flight departs a little later than the majority of the US-bound flights, but please note that the security procedures for US flights at the airport are extremely tight, with a checkpoint before you even check-in (and I was last there before the war started), so leave yourself plenty of time.
