PRAIANO or POSITANO

hello everyone,

My fiance and I are traveling to Italy for 10 days for our honeymoon in June. A few days in Rome, two nights in Capri and then 5 days on Amalfi coast. The question is...positano or praiano? It seems that the prices in positano are very high,,,, whereas Ive looked up some very nice looking hotels in praiano (ie le sirene and onda verde) that are much more reasonably priced. However, is Praiano very out of the way? My fiance thinks positano would be more convenient, and that it would be annoying to be in praiano if we have to take a bus every time we want to go to dinner...etc. But if praiano is one-third the price of positano, is positano really worth it? Also, would praiano perhaps be quieter and more romantic, an advantage over positano? Should we stay in Praiano and rent a moped for the five days to go along the coast? Or is positano the place to be regardless of price? We are trying to book a place soon, so suggestions would be really appreciated on town preferences and hotels!

thank you!

Some posters on this site love Praiano. It looks to be a little too quiet for me. I don't think you want to get on a moped on the Amalfi coast road! There are some reasonable places to stay in Positano such as Villa Rosa, Villa Gabrisa, Hotel California. They are not luxury, but Villa Rosa has fabulous views. If you want a nicer room, then you can probably get more for your $$ in Praiano. I am going back to Positano for the 4th time. I think it is worth it!

There is not much to do at night in Praiano, this is no night life and the busses stop running about 9pm so you would have to cab back from another place on the coast. There are some restaurants in Praiano too and a very nice looking one at Onda Verde which has it's own private rocks to lie on by the water.

In other words, Praiano is very laid back and Positano has more tourists and more things going on. Both have beautiful views and both can be romantic, it's your call.

two thumbs up for praiano. same great views as positano at half the price. praiano is not out of the way in any sense. it's located btwn positano and amalfi and is a short trip to either.

there are excellent restaurants in praiano and as for nightlife, positano doesn't exactly rock and roll into the wee hours either.

my suggestion: save the money on the very overpriced and touristy positano and rent a car using praiano as a base for the entire amalfi coast.

Hi Stevie,

I have beeen to both.

Praiano is 6km East of Positano. There is regular bus service between the two towns.

You would have to take SITA buses to get anywhere else on the AC from both towns.

Positano is larger, more crowded and has more to do.

If you want relaxing - Positano

If you want very relaxing - Praiano

I stayed two weeks last year in Praiano and really enjoyed it. It has the same beautiful views as Positano and is less expensive.

There is not much to do there except look at the scenery and eat at the few restaurants, there are not many shops and the few are geared mostly towards the locals. There is a nice plaza in front of the church where families mix together and I sat and watched sunsets.

The only downside was that I would have to plan my evenings around the SITA bus schedule which does stop around 9pm,if I wanted to visit the other towns along the coast.

Since you are honeymooning, you might want the peace and quiet and romantic views so for you I think Praiano would be great. Positano has a more tourist oriented atmosphere with the shops, restaurants and many hotels (big and small), compared to Praiano it is lively.

Hi Ira, I think I just posted the pictures web site because I was staying and hanging out with local friends and didn't do many tourist things to report.

I think if I remember, yours was about the same time and we ate at some of the same places so I didn't add anything.

I am going back twice in the Spring to Positano and to Amalfi, so I'll report then, if I do anything unusual.

Ciao Stevie,

Most decisions about staying in Praiano are made on price, however I would prefer Praiano to Positano although you might find it too quiet and inconvenient if using the local buses to get out and about, especially in the evening. I drive a scooter almost every other day here and you will find it the most suitable mode of transport during the summer months.

thank you so much for all the responses...Im so glad I found this website. So helpful. Well we are still deciding praiano or positano. But any suggestions on hotels? We are looking for something at about $200 (or less) a night if possible. I know praiano is cheaper, so probably more likely within budget....but we can go as high as $240 or so a night. La Sirene looks very pretty in praiano and villa rosa in positano....but more suggestions please?

Hi,
We stayed at the Tramonto D'Oro in Praiano for 1 week. It is a wonderful hotel on the cliff over looking the sea. There is a roof top pool that is very large and refreshing and a fabulous view. Most of the rooms have balconies with the same view. There are quiet a few restaurants in the town. The hotel serves breakfast on the balcony with the fabulous view. The hotel also has a restaurant which was decent. I think some of the other restaurants in town were better. We did rent a scooter for a day and it turned out to be a more powerful motor bike. My DH did get the hand of it, but I was not relaxed. We took public transportation everywhere, but we were there at the end of June and if you want to rent a car, there was not a lot of traffic. The hotel has some parking available. I would go back to this place any time. It will be wonderful
