Don't understand Positano

I am trying to book a hotel in Positano. I just don't understand the lay-out of the town. I am used to looking at a map of a city, and deciding where I want to be in relation to things. I know that Positano goes up the side of the mountain from the sea, but what is considered "town"? Is it at the top? Is it by the sea? If a hotel says it is 10 minute walk from the beach and 15 minutes from the city center, where does that mean that it is? How far away from what I see in pictures can I stay and still be close to things?
Hi Marty!

No matter where you go in Positano, you will be going either up or down stairs. Why don't you post the names of the hotels you are considering? I know someone here will be able to tell you exactly where they are in the overall layout of Positano.

Buon viaggio!

Marty, There is no " centro" in Positano. The varible is verticality.
Let your legs decide for you. I like the Palazzo Murat for a lower perspective and the Casa Albertina or the Poseidon for the best views.

Hi Marty,

For all practical purposes Positano lies below the Amalfi Coast Road and the sea.

A one way road loops from the North of Positano at the Amalfi Coast Road down through the town and back up to to the Amalfi Coast Road to the South side of Positano.

The loop proceeds approximately 2/3 of the way (down) through Positano before climbing back up.

Bus service is available about every 15 minutes on this 'circle' route through town.

Walkers can shorten the distance by taking stairs up/down in a more direct fashion. And, from the lowest point of the bus route/roadway; the only alternative is to walk from that point down to the beach and vice versa.

From your inquiry I would suggest that anywhere you stay in Positano you are very near everything else.

Thanks, y'all. I'm not set on a hotel. I think the Albergo California, but I was trying to situate it and another I was looking at.

Hello Marty,

Albergo California is on Via C Colombo 100m up from Le Sireneuse. Not far from the Amalfitana Coast Road (Sorrento-Amalfi buses). 5mins. from centre, 15 mins from beach and quayside for ferry/hydrofoil services.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

Steve: Forgot to ask. Have you stayed there. Can you tell me anything else about the hotel itself? Maria seemed very nice when we called her.

Marty - I can't tell you anything about it I'm afraid, - I just found it on my street map. If you re-post with Albergo Calif in the heading maybe someone else can help ... Good luck!

Steve
