I stayed in Praiano a few months ago. I have a friend that lives in the Amalfi coast and he actually picked the area. It's less expensive than the popular Positano and is centrally located on the coast. The town is smallish but there are a few restaurants. Much quieter than some other areas. It depends on what you are looking for and how much you can afford, but I thought it was great.

I stayed in Praiano in 1999 at the Netuno hotel. My room had a balcony that looked out over the sea. It was really nice. The whole Amalfi area is stunningly beautiful. Dont go in the summer time. Way too crowded. I was there in Sept and the weather was good.

praiano is a superbe base for the amalfi coast. it is pretty, inexpensive and central. to the east: amalfi and ravello; to the west: positano, the islands and sorrento.
it sports surprisingly good local restaurants and an unencombered by rampant tourism ambiance hard to replicate on the costeria.
