prague queries

We are off to Prague 12th Feb. Got a great deal at 5*hotel paris - anyone stayed here?

I think it's near Wenscles Square and I wanted to know what this area is like? I've heard Prague is being turned into a British Stag & Hen haven because of cheap booze and strip joints - is this true. If so, is it possible to avoid the rougher areas and which areas are these likely to be? We are going for a romantic break, not a booze-up with fellow Brits who are getting a bad name by all accounts.

Thanks for any info you can give.

From an oldster in Prague last June: a wonderful historic city incl. Wenceslas Sq. I didn't see anything so sleezy as you describe. Walking to the Charles Bridge you will see all sorts of shope and people of course.

Thanks Ozarksbill - your answer was very re-assuring. However, I feel you must not have seen Wenceslas Square at night as I have consistantly read on many other forums that WS in particular turns into an adult world with casinos and strip joints aimed at the many Stag/Hen Parties, also with many hookers on the street offering their trade quite persistantly. This has also been told to us personally from guys we know in UK who were on stag nights there.

The point is I know parts of Prague are pretty wild at night - that doesn't bother me as each to their own. My question was where the main places like this are (now I know WS is one)so I can choose to avoid this at night with my family.

Thanks to everyone who has replied to my Prague queries.

I haven't been there in a couple years, but I don't think of central Prague as being full of strip joints or a bad area. I really don't think it will be a problem. Hotel Pariz isn't that close to Wenceslas Square at all, so that is incorrect information. It is very near Namesti Republicky metro stop and the Municipal Bldg, a bit north of Powder Gate. It is a perfectly decent area, and very convenient.

Thanks Christina

I'm only going by the Hotels description which says "close to WS and O. Town Square", but I've had a good look on the map and like you say it's not that close to WS. Ideal for Municipal House though, we have free concert tickets for the 15th it will be handy!

I make a trip to Prague every year. I think that I know Prague pretty good. I have been in Wenceslas Square a lot including at night. Your friends have made it sound a lot worse than it is. There may be some hookers, but you usually don't see them until late at night. I have only seen them on the right side of the street as you walk up to the horse statue. The only person that they bother are single men or groups of men. You probably would not even know that they were hookers if someone did not tell you. There is a strip joint on a side street but not on WS. I think that there are 2 casinos on WS. They are not really that noticable from the sidewalk. I think that it is worth a trip at night to walk up to the horse statue and look down on WS. Just go early. I will also be in Prague Feb. 12.

Lynn100:

Obviously, the hotel's notion of what constitutes "close to" is probably a lot different than you might expect. Some hotels will do or say anything to get business.

I was in Wenceslas Square last September a few nights, by myself. I think I got "hit on" by one woman who was probably a hooker, but I laughed when she approached me and moved on - certainly nothing to fear. Such people were greatly outnumbered by the regular tourists milling around, and honestly, I had forgotten about this woman until reading this thread. Prague is very safe and certainly one of the least seedy cities I've visited. Then again, I live in a city that has a lot of homeless people who agressively hit you up for spare change, so what I saw in Prague was kind of tame. Go figure.
