Prague or Vienna for New Year's Eve?

My husband and I will be traveling to Prague and Vienna over Christmas and New Years. We will be in Prague over Christmas, for sure. Trying to figure out if we should do a side trip to Vienna and return to Prague for the New Year's Eve celebration, or if we should spend it in Vienna. We would appreciate everyone's input. We are in our early 30s and want to be somewhere fun and exciting on New Year's Eve!

I would suggest Vienna for New Years. The city center is one huge party with numerous city squares turned into music centers to fill every taste( rock to waltz) Many streets are closed to traffic to accomodate the crowds of up to one million people. Celebrations start early and continue with fireworks at midnight. Many kiosks sell food and drink of all types.
Best of all- it is free to all!

Thank you Molker! We just booked an open jaw ticket going to Prague and leaving from Vienna, so we will be spending New Years in Vienna. Looking forward to it!

message- tracyk:

Good ! Book a hotel as early as possible in Vienna.
Try for one in the First District ( Innenstadt) This is the center of activity.
All hotels will be full during the days between Christmas and New Years.

Check out the Hotelpension Arenberg (4* and reasonable rates)for your Vienna stay. It is a Best Western but has the posh Vienna feel. It is small with just 22 or so rooms. The halls are decorated with signed photos to Frau Arenberg from the conductors, actors and artists who stayed with her. They have homemade muslei and a very nice staff. It is located within the Ring, about 2-minute walk to U-Bahn and 3 minutes from the Air Terminal (where buses come from airport). You are about a 5-minute walk to Stephensplatz through a nice area of town.
You can attend a ball and dress in period clothing or have fun in the street. Vienna is definitely the place to be on new years.
