Prague/Budapest or Vienna/Budapest

I'm putting an 8 day trip together as a surprise for DH's birthday next spring. Thinking of one of those two city combinations or possibly Ireland in April. Any ideas, suggestions, etc to help me decide? We're mid 50's, travel a lot, like museums, city culture but also like to get outside major cities and see the countryside. 3star hotels are fine - travelling sans kids this trip. Thanks!

Prague/Budapest would be my choice. Vienna is intersting but has never been one of my favorites - always seems kind of triste - a little stuck in fin de siecle.

While both Prague and Budapest seen more exciting, have more going on - and are probably somwhat less expensive.

Prague/Vienna might also work - I'm just curious as to experiences folks have had visiting these cities. he was in Prague for a long weekend a few years back and really liked it. I overnighted in Vienna in a rainstorm so really can't speak to the area at all.

We did Prague/Vienna a year and a half ago and really enjoyed the contrast. Sort of combining a great party and formal dinner in one trip. Both have lots to do and see. Both have magnificent architecture but with greatly contrasting style. Vienna certainly has museums and city culture. Both have great music. We especially enjoyed the musical instrument museum - it was unique.
I can't speak for Budapest since I have yet to go there.

What a tough choice! I love all three cities. A few thoughts: Vienna and Budapest offer more contrasts. However, of the three, Prague is my favorite. Vienna is probably the most expensive of your choices. OK, so I guess I choose Prague/Budapest!

Is there any way you can add more time and visit all three?

Do you plan to go between cities by air or train. If the latter, Prague/Vienna would make more sense. The trip is just under 4 hours by train or bus.
