Please help with Prague hotel choice!!
Hi. My husband and I will be spending 6 nights in Prague in early September and are trying to decide at which hotel we should stay. We are currently looking at Hotel U Pava in Mala Strana and Hotel U Prince in Stare Mesto. We are also considering the Metamorphis.

My husband and I are looking for a place that's on the quiet side (I'm a light sleeper) but within walking distance of most of the things we will want to see as well as restaurants. (We won't be renting a car until after we leave Prague.) I had initially been leaning towards Hotel U Pava in Mala Strana because I imagined that Stare Mesto was like Bourbon Street in New Orleans, but now I'm not so sure. Cleanliness and charm are also important to us. We want to try to stay at $200 or under a night and these hotels are available and around that price.

Does anybody have any thoughts about the location of these hotels (any problems with the flooding) or anything else. (I've seen the comments recently posted on U Prince.)

Any comments, thoughts or insight will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I went to Prague in August but stayed with a family friend. So I can not offer advice on a hotel, however I can tell you about the areas you are looking in . . .
Mala Strana is a quieter side of town - it has been less touched by modern construction. I would recommend (based on what you have said) to stay at Hotel U Pava - I remember seeing it in my travels - it was a nice looking hotel in a good area.

Hi wj1,
We stayed at the U Pava last August and it is extremely lovely. The location was perfect for walking everywhere we wanted to go. It is unquestionably clean and has a great deal of charm. It faces onto a quiet little square and is across the street from a large garden that has crowing peacocks (or so we were told that's what it was) some mornings. That was our only noise problem and it was actually pretty amusing. We were there just before the floods but I have heard that the water covered most of the square but did not reach the hotel.

To wh1: I also enthusiastically recommend the U Pava. (It stands for "Under the Peacock", which is why we (and coco) were awakened by peacocks in the neighboring garden.) A very peaceful area. If you get the delux room, you can see Prague castle from your room. Very beautiful at night when it is lit up. As coco says, short walks to almost everything. Charles Bridge only a block or so away. About a block the other way, you can catch the tram up to the castle (#22), then walk down via Nerudova street.
My wife was very pleased with the cleanliness. The staff incredibly friendly. Breakfasts were very good.

I haven't stayed at any of those hotels, but location wise they are all great. U Pava will be a quieter area and is still close to what you'll want to look at. That area was under two meters of water last August and you can still see a building here and there where the plaster is water damaged. I understand most hotels are back up and running again.

Hi wj,

I wrote this a few months ago to someone else about the Metamorphis:

"The Metamorphis is on the other side of the square, set back from the main hub-bub by a small alley. It's in a courtyard of high-end boutiques. Very wonderful. We had room 28, which was very large and quiet. Ask for it."

Still a big fan, though I can't argue with the appeal of some friendly peacocks. Personally, I'm glad we decided to stay in Stare Mesto. It was much closer to the things we wanted to walk to and the location of the hotel was very discreet -- no noise or crowd/traffic problems at all.

Have a great time~

stay at the Four Seasons - the best there - great location in the Old Town but with views of the river - they should have some deals under 200.00/nt - and be reopened by then. I also like Pariz, Grand Hotel Bohemia, Palace Hotel Praha

We stayed at the Penzion Balbin on Balbinova near the Muzeum Metro and Wenceslas Square. It is on the top floors of an apartment building so quiet, very clean, excellent buffet breakfast and helpful English-speaking staff. There is an elevator after 1st flight of stairs and the door to outside is locked so safe. You are 5-10 minute walk to just about any where you want to go. In 1997 we paid $35/night off season. I think it was about $85 in season the last time I checked.
