My mom and I are going to Paris for a week in May for my 30th b-day. I need help with hotel suggestions! We would like to stay on the Left Bank (preferably St. Germaine du Pres) and want to be well-located so that we can walk places. I would like to pay no more than $300 per night. Any suggestions?

The first place to start is Fodor's book on Paris. You'll get lots of ideas as to the amenities and what to expect. And you don't actually have to buy the book - look on-line.

Alos, do a search on this site with 'Paris and hotels' and see the wonderful suggwstions made by travelers.

AT $300 per night you have many fine choices. Here are just three ways to look:
Click at the top of this screen on HOtels, and look through the fodors listings,many of which will have user comments;

do a search on some hotels that appeal to you at tripadvisor.com

Do a search right here (in the little box above) on some hotels by name

Just some on the left bank that are often recommended (though not strictly in St Germain area) are
d'Aubusson, le Regent, Relais Christine (check current prices).
I am a fan of the d'Aubusson.

In your price range there are any number of good hotels in the St.-Germain-des-Prés area: Le Madison, Relais St.-Germain, Hôtel de l'Abbaye, Relais Médicis, Left Bank St.-Germain, Le Regent, Millésime Aubusson...it will primarily be a question of where you can get a reservation between now and May, which is the start of high season. Start checking out web sites NOW!

A second vote for Le Madison. Stayed there in February and enjoyed the location and hotel very much. Have fun!

As far as I know they're still 2 different hotels--but I can't be positive. Someone here is bound to know.

I left one out: the Duc de St.-Simon, which is the favorite Paris hotel of P. D. James, of mystery fame.

They are two separate hotels but they're related to the other.

Millesime is on Rue Jacob and is under the same ownership as the D'Aubusson.
The superior rooms there are lovely and good sized , 190Euro. Lovely staff too

I would recommend le Regent on Rue Dauphine in the 6th. I stayed there for 9 nights about a year ago. The location is wonderful, in the heart of the left bank, near Buci market and within close proximity of two metro stops. There are many fine resturaunts within waking distance. The staff was really helpful and there is an ATM outside the front door.

Leapoffaith, I know the hotel's location. It is, as you mention, in a great position. Did you stay in a standard room or a deluxe room? We keep reading that the standard rooms are very small. Thanks.

I also recommend a superior room in the Le Madison. Good hotel, good location.

While at le Regent, I stayed in Room 14, a standard room, as I was travelling solo. This room is located just to the right of the top of the stairs depicted in the photos of the lobby, on the first floor.

The room was small, but certainly enough for me. It had a comfortable double bed, an amoire, a chippendale desk, a nighttable, telephone, but not alot of travel-about-the-room room. Window looked out on the courtyard. I liked the fact that I had a mini fridge (I went to nearby market: bought wine, cheese, friut, etc), and a TV with English CNN. The bathroom was great with a full glass walk in shower, heated towel rack, marble sink, etc. I kept thinking that if I was there with my boyfriend, would it have been enough? Probably... We love Europe, but, hey if you're spending lots of time in your hotel, there's a problem!!!

Room 15 across from me was larger (I checked it out during a check out cleaning). Bigger, with full bath with marble tub. As you know, there are lots of superior rooms available at le Regent. I would encourage you to call of fax them if you have questions...I found them to be very approachable, user friendly, and honest. I'll certainly be staying there for my next Paris stay.

You just can't get a better location in Paris in my opinion. If you read all the reviews, it is certainly all about location, location, location. If you stay there you will understand...

Thank you leapoffaith for the description of your room and that of the other room at Le Regent. Oh yes, like I stated before, I really do like the location of Le Regent. Just a couple of minutes from the market at rue de Buci for the cheese, bread, fruit, and wine to take back to the room! I did walk past the hotel a few weeks ago-such an envious location to be in.
It's just that the superior double rooms are a bit expensive but your description of the standard double room seems good enough for one person. I stayed in a standard double room at Hotel Le Verneuil and I think my room seems like almost the same size as your room at Le Regent-maybe yours was larger, who knows? The bathroom you had sounds really nice-a walk-in shower with a glass enclosure? That's nice.
I am beginning to really obsess about another visit and I'm thinking of Le Regent now. I know they offer some winter specials/discounts so it may work out well for the rate then.

Can anyone give me more info on the Millesime? I am trying to decide between it and the Hotel Sainte Beuve. I got a great rate of 199 euros at the Millesime that includes breakfast.
