Planning Stages - have some questions on Paris to Vienna

I am just starting to plan our travel for Christmas this year, and have long thought about renting an apartment in Paris, but wonder if we should just keep with the hotels. But my real question is how simple is it to get to Vienna from Paris during the holiday season, is the weather such in Vienna that we should save this city for a spring or summer trip or would it be worth IYO to take a few days to visit during Christmas time.

Hi R,

How many nights will you have, total?

Probably the best way to get from Paris to Vienna is to fly. It might even be worthwhile to book a multi-city flight US(?)-Paris-Vienna-US rather than trying to find a cheap flight between the two European capitals.

For International flights, try http://www.kayak.com/

For flights within Europe, try http://www.flylc.com/directall-en.asp

and then compare costs, keeping in mind that posted flight costs on cheap airlines do not include all sorts of extra fees that can become the major part of the ticket cost.

Well Vienna is on the central european plain - and so perhaps slightly more likely to have snow that Paris - but I don;t think the temps are very much colder (it's not Siberia). Think about visiting Boston or New York at that time of year - with Paris more like DC perhaps.

I think that the difference in temperature between Vienna and Paris may be quite large. Paris is still within the moderating influence of the Atlantic while Vienna is more likely to be influenced by continental climate extremes.

Average December temperatures:

Paris: 36 - 45F

Vienna: 30 - 37F

But these are only averages. Check before departure to see if the winter is tending to be warmer or colder.

Based on my limited experience a little bit early in the Christmas season, Vienna really `does` Christmas, and I think there would be lots of decorations and events in Vienna. I would prefer it to Paris, personally, but that is my personal opinion about Vienna vs. Paris at any time of year.
