Picnic in Paris

Many of you have recommended grabbing some french bread and some frence wine, and settling down for a beautiful picnic. Can anyone recommend a perfect picnic spot in Paris? I'll be there in two weeks and i'm staying in the Latin Quarter. Thanks!!

Hi bimst,
There are also, the Tuilleries, the Parc Monceau, and the banks of the Seine.

One of my favorite locations, in the Latin Quarter (the 5th) directly across the Seine from Notre Dame is the petit Square Ren Viviani.

See website at: http://www.angelfire.com/art/stjulien/square.html

Goodness! So many choices. The park in front of the Musée de l'Armée where all the old guys play boules, the Parc Montsouris, the Parc Monceau, the tip of the Ile de la Cité in back of Notre Dame, the Champs de Mars, the Jardin des Plantes, the Jardin de Luxembourg....you really can't go wrong grabbing any green space available.

Go to the Bois de Bologna and find the rose garden. Heaven on earth.

All good suggestions so far.

One of my favorite places for a mid-city picnic is the park on the western end of Ile de la Cite -- it is directly off the Pont Neuf. You've got the Seine on two sides, and lots and lots of people-watching opportunities.

For a more secluded picnic, you could also try one of the cemeteries. Pere Lachaise is the most famous, but it really is out of the way; the Montparnasse is more convenient if you're in that part of the city. My very favorite cemetery, though, is the Pet Cemetery in Asnieres (a short walk from the Asnieres metro station). It's right on the Seine, and the monuments are incredible. You'll even find Rin Tin Tin's grave!

**Parc des Buttes Chaumont**
in the 19th.
Surprised that more people don't dig this. Totally fabricated to look totally natural. Very impressive.

Matt, nice to see you mention the Parc des Buttes Chaumont. Finally visited it on my last trip to Paris -- on a sunny Sunday -- and loved it.

I also like the park on the western end of Ile de la Cite (anyone know the name?) that Rizzuto mentioned.

Though not a park, another nice spot on the Seine is the Pont des Arts footbridge. My girlfriend & I walked out there on a Friday night in September a few years ago and there were a lot of people having picnics on the bridge, some with blankets just spread out on the walkway.

One of my favories has already been mentioned a couple of times - the tiny "park" at the tip of Ile de la Cite.

We also used to picnic frequently at Sacre Coeur (on the lawn if it was a lax day and they were allowing it). If they're not letting people on the lawn, a great spot is about halfway down the stairs, on the flat part on the side of the stairs. It's wide enough to sit and spread your things out, and solid so you can easily stand your wine and glasses! And has a WONDERFUL view of Paris!

Another favorite is Invalides - in the nice weather it's full of Parisians getting some sun & I love it for that reason.
