What calls you back when you return to Paris?

You know, some cafe? Some shop, gallery, museum view, church, park bench, whatever...each time you go back to Paris you MUST go there? Maybe to "feel" that you are in Paris again?

I have that with many cities and favorite traveling destinations. When in London, I love to go to Herrods Food Halls to walk around and drool. When I am in New York, must have a slice of pizza and just walk and walk, when in San Francisco, must ride a ferry and munch on sour dough...you know, something like that?

So, when in Paris, what calls to you to return there time after time?

TOO many things to single out, but the crepe stand on the NE corner of Rue du Faubourg Montmartre and Boulevard Montmartre is definitely one of them.

Well...some may say this is tacky but it has to be the Eiffel Tower in the daytime and the "sparkle" show at night (sorry Ira). And Notre- Dame...loved the movie "Hunchback of Notre Dame." Paris is in my blood...it's all magic to me!

un pain au beurre avec foie gras and a bottle of red wine while sitting on the stone benches, thousands of years old, in the Arennes Lutece watching the old men play boules, the young kids playing footbal and the lovers kissing

Yes, I thought the food would be a big draw here. It is all about the food...But also where you are sitting and enjoying the food; what are you seeing, hearing, smelling, all of that has so much to do with the experience.

I have always thought it funny that you eat a food in one place and it is heaven. You take it home or try and recreate and it is just not the same. It has got to be in that location, cafe, bench or whatever to make it all right. Magic is a good word for it. For all the magic to come together in a crescendo so to speak. Isn't that why we LOVE to travel?

It has to be my dear, long lost love Camille - I look for her angelic face and limber, buxom body in every crowd.

Often, I'm stunned to see brief flashes of her warm, tender smile reflected in store windows and a chill runs down my spine as the wind sadly whispers the last tragic words she yelled on that cold rainy night when the midnight train pulled out of Gare Nord for the south of France:

"Don't try to follow me or I'll shoot to kill!

She was a fiery lass with a bit of a temper!

Lovely, Degas.

Reminds me of the evening when I was supposed to take the last train out of Paris with Ilsa and she didn't show up.

In despair, I took a job at an American bar in Casablanca.

ira, I think we share the same terrible pain - the powerful stuff that black and white movies are made of!

Phillippe's place -- La Varangue, a charming restaurant in the 7th.

And I will never go to Paris without going to at least the 2nd deck of the Eiffel Tower so I can take it all in.

You all are quite a colorful group of romantics, humorists and smart asses. Not committing to who is who. YOU know who you are...and that is what makes this board such a fascinating place to learn about travel (and other things).

After our Paris trip, we will have to come up with our next European destination so I can still browse the "Europe" boards...

Thanks for all of your comments. Love them.
