Of course ,one does not have to speak Russian to enjoy the visit.
I was curious about the language ..
it is very difficult, but what language is not.
I was taking public transit in both cities and a train between , some knowledge of
Russian was helpful.
I would recommend purchasing a ticket to Hermitage on line.
Took me five minutes to pick it up and get in .
I also purchased and printed tickets for Bolshoi, train SP- Moscow, and train Moscow - airport.
Some years ago no one would have thought it possible ...

IME learning a language can act as a spur to discover more about the people who speak it and their country, and vice versa - there are no downsides, no matter how little you know.
danon - I agree about how the world of travel has changed. I was watching a feature on BBC news the other day by a chap who was navigating his way round China using his smartphone. He could translate public notices and menus, work out where he wanted to go next and how to get there, send messages out looking for guides in his next destination - he was able to meet lots of locals, sometimes under the very noses of the Chinese police. of course he had a camera crew in tow, but even so, it looked like a very interesting way to travel.

In 1440. Gutenberg created his printing press.......it opened the whole
new world of books, bibles, and information to the population of that time.
It was a revolutionary invention.
Almost five hundred years later the Internet ( and other technology) has
changed travel, commerce, business , information , and our way of life in an unsurpassed
way.
What will the next five hundred years bring is unimaginable.
