Passport/Foreign id no. confusion- help!

I am trying to buy a train ticket through Spain on their website, renfe.
I'm american & on the registration it's asking me for one of the following:
-foreign id no.
-tax id no.
-passenger
or
-other
Does my passport number qualify for one of these categories?
I'm confused.
help!

I'm American and just filled in my passport number. I think it didn't quite fit right but I filled it in as long as possible (showing first digits), figuring if they asked to check, that would make the most sense.

Just select "other" and enter your passport number. It fits.

Take a copy of your passport and an original form of ID (I used my Drivers Licence) when you're out & about in Spain.

I booked tickets online and was asked to show ID when I collected them. One agent accepted my passport copy, another requested an original.

In Venezuela and, I think also in Spain, some shop assistants wanted to sight my Passport when I used my credit card and I was asked to input the last few digits of my passport no. on some occasions when using an ATM.
