Support booking.com or don't, it doesn't matter. Your experiences in Antigua are irrelevant. Travelers to Paris have long known that September is the priciest month to book a hotel room there, no matter how you do it, because of the trade shows. You can keep analyzing and overthinking and offering tedious explanations, you can book a hotel room at a price that seems too much for you, or you can change your plans and travel to Paris sometime other than September. As a general rule, I wouldn't bring your meticulously analyitical world view with you to France. You will be disappointed.

Thank you all for educating us to the fact that fashion / trade show activity is dominant in Paris during September.

Our visit to Paris, after many years is related more to the hub of the airline we chose to fly with and is a very small part of a 6 plus week itinerary / celebration from Sydney through Hanoi, London, Prague, Cesky K, Salzburg, Alto Adige/Val Gardena, Le Marche, Liguria thence through Nice, TGV to Paris and Home.

So we are taking a fairly detailed approach to itinerary and budget to achieve best overall value for money.

As for your comments StCirq we didn't find our experience in St Lucia irrelevant.

You have every right to like / support booking.com. We don't.

My view is that this is a place where views can be expressed with an underlying intent to help others.

You criticism of my overthinking, offering tedious explanations and bringing my meticulously analytical world view is unfounded and is taken more as a personal attack sadly

It is sometimes wonderful to not be a high end tourist, because people who go to one and two-star hotels almost never have a problem during these high season surges. I would almost feel sorry for the disappointed high enders who can no longer appreciate anything simple and basic in life, but then again they are only punishing themselves.

Totally agree kerouac and we are more than happy to have achieved our goal of a large bed at the 3 star Bastille de Launay near Marais as advised above.

Our budget will now point to food in Paris.

We have a long journey, and the tyranny of distance to Australia adds to the challenge.

Our journey is a mix of wine producer agriturismos, country houses, Italian Family 2-3 stars, a cruise on Halong Bay Vietnam and a few (discounted) 5 stars.

It is nice to have the memories of staying at places like the Villa d'Este in Cernobio and climbing through the battlements on the hill there, but some of our best experiences have been more in the 3 star category in places like Deiva Marina, Serralunga de Alba, Pienza and Grimaud.

Best wishes

Looks like a super trip, GoodWill. Hope you have a great time.

Don’t worry about St.Circus. She can be snotty on occasion.
