I agree with Kerouac but I shift a little further east to stay near Place de la Republic. Main attraction is that five Metro lines serve the Place, making for efficient travel to many parts of the city. The plaza is full of activity, but by locals. A couple of (relatively) cheap Ibis sit on neavby (relatively) quiet sidestreets.
Side thought: Any Paris hotel that doesn't attract at least some tourists is probably on the verge of extinction.

Place de la République is indeed another excellent area, just two metro stations from Gare de l'Est.
Southam, the big difference in tourist hotels is which ones attract exclusively North American and Asian tourists and which ones appeal more to European (and French) visitors.

Several years ago, we stayed at the Citadines Bastille-Marais on Richard Lenoir Blvd. A metro stop is a short walk down the same street.
It’s an aparthotel, all rooms with a small kitchen. They did serve breakfast, too.
We stayed there bc it was more affordable than a lot of places in the center, but still quick easy access via metro to sites around Paris… and there were plenty of decent eateries around.
Our 1 bedroom apartment there was very clean and comfortable.
When we stayed there, there was an outdoor market across the street, twice a week, selling lots and lots of food, baked goods, produce, meats, etc. Don’t know if that’s still the case.
If I ever return to Paris, I’d stay there again.

I very much enjoyed a stay at the Grand Hotel des Balcons tucked in a quiet street just north of the Jardins du Luxembourg. The other guests seemed to mostly be French. Breakfast was great. Hotel staff was very kind. Near Odeon metro.
