Hi H,
Is there a reason why it has to be within 3 blocks of a particular metro stop?
If you stay in the best room at the Hotel Bonaparte (5th or 6th floor and well under $200, w/AC) you have a 2 min walk to the St. Sulpice stop (line 4) which goes to St. Michel and connects to Cluny (line 10) at the Odeon stop. (Or you could walk the 3 blocks.)
Hotel Bonaparte, 61 Rue Bonaparte in the 6th. About 124E dbl w/bkfst
Tel 33 1 43 26 97 37
FAX 33 1 46 33 57 67
For more info, enter "Hotel Bonaparte" in the "search this forum" box.

I can assist within proximity of St. Michel and the Sorbonne. I have listed top to bottom, top being higher in price, but still under $200 a night.
1. Le Clos Medicis- Close to Luxemburg gardens and Sorbonne. Stylish boutique hotel.
2. Hotel St. Jacques- In heart of Latin Quarter. A lot of french charm, 6 floor french style w/balcony. Very highly rated. No air conditioning.
3. Hotel College De France- Moderate rooms, but highly rated. Close to Sorbonne, St. Michel. No air conditioning.
Hope these help!

thanks! Have been to paris before, stayed on the right bank.want to stay a few blocks from the RER.
yes I read the post and will consider the Henri the 5th
.Was still considering the Hotel D'orsay but unusre about the area some of these places have no air and for august would be a problem
maybe I should consider postponing for a few weeks into september as others have suggested that some restaurants close during the month

Which RER line is it that you want to stay by..? d'Orsay is by RER-C (Versailles) while St Michel is by both RER-C and RER-B (airports)...
Some restaurants close in August but not all of them... if you have a specific interest in one or two special restaurants, then you can find out if they are closed in August.
Room rates are often discounted in August, so you could find a nice hotel with good A/C and maybe save some euro.

I would like September probably a little better just because of activities, but if your main reason for wanting to postpone a couple weeks is money, I wouldn't do that. September is a very popular hotel season in Paris and peak rates whereas August is low season and many hotels give discounts, as Travelnut mentioned. One particular hotel might not have any different rates for you, but there is no problem getting a hotel with AC in August for under US$200, that's for sure. A lot of people wouldn't go just a couple weeks into September without booking a hotel with AC, either, although I might.
I don't know why you want to be near the Orsay RER stop so much. If it's because of the train from the airport, you have to transfer to get onto that line, anyway -- it's the B line that is from the airport, which is the St Michel and Luxembourg stops. The latter is much nicer to me than around St Michel. Cluny isn't on the same line, although you can walk there in underground tunnels to that metro stop. It isn't on the RER line.

Id rather to be close to the river.also I love the right bank but staying there was problematic as it involved transferring at the chatelet so I ended up walking most times. The RER does save time
secondly the bus line crosses over by the d'orsay. The bus takes a while too but at least you can sightsee along the way.
the only reason the change to September is to avoid the restaurant closings in August...that would be a major downside
thank you
