Night temps 50's - too cold for sandals
We live where we can wear sandals almost year round. On a trip to Italy in May a few years back, sandals worked out just fine. The temperature at night in Austria and the Czeck Republic have been running in the 50's. (Up to 80 in the day) I was glad to have my tennis shoes to go to a baseball game at night in SF last year when the temps also dropped to the 50's. Should I bring closed toe shoes to Europe this year? I guess it will be obvious that I am American if I wear sandals all the time?

What do you think you should do? A "safe" answer is to bring a few pair in case you decide there that you need them. Problem Solved !!!
BTW, there are many parts of the world were people "wear sandals all the time", not just in America.

Well - since europe is a temperate climate (not sub-tropical like FL) and tends to get some rain at all times of year - it would seem foolhardy to bring nothing but sandals. I would bring at least one pair of comfy, waterproof walking shoes.
(Don;t understand how what you wear at home has to do with what you need to wear in a different climate. Would you wear sandals to the North Pole?)

I would definitely bring sandals, sneakers, and a pair or two of dressier shoes for going out at night. People will know you're American as soon as you speak to them, so I wouldn't worry about what you wear on your feet.

I always travel with one pair of great sneakers (gym shoes), one pair of nice looking comfortable sandals, and one other something pair. I do not think about what people may guess about me, rather dress for practicality with reasonable presentability.
