Nice Mid priced Rome Hotels...Do They Exist??

Any recommendations for a mid-priced hotel in Rome with the following criteria:

1. Good location...central to prime tourist attractions
2. In the $200-$250 price range(U.S.$)
3. Not noisy
4.Has charm and ambience
5. Concierge service

Possibly a B & B might work too.

All feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hotel Portoghesi is very nice bur may be a bit above that "mid-price" range.

LJV:

We favor Hotel Modigliani near Spanish Steps on a quiet street..lovely place favored by several other Fodorites. Elevator. (should be in the middle of your rate range)

Yes, and you can find them all described on Tripadvisor and Venere.com.

Thanks everyone!

The Modigliani looks terrific...is it easy to get a taxi from the hotel?

There is the Hotel Smeraldo near Campo di Fiori - small hotel and gets good reviews.

I also have to second zeppole's recommendation for Tripadvisor and Venere.com (I find that Venere has great reviews for Italy hotels).

We've never had a problem. You can walk a block downhill to Piazza Barberini, or a block to Via Veneto... plenty of taxis..or the hotel desk will call one for you.

Yup, easy as can be. And the hotel will arrange for transport to/from the airport as well for a reasonable price. I haven't used it for arrivals, but for getting to Fiumicino for an early-morning flight it was a blessing.

The staff there are outstanding - very young, creative, full of helpful suggestions. Go online and look at their newsletter - charming.

St Cirq: which hotel? I'm probably overlooking something obvious, but it's late. Thanks.

Damn, I thought we were the only ones on this board that ever stayed at the Modigliani! I concur -- we were on the top (6th Floor) in one of the gigantic rooms with the killer view. Loved the room, loved the staff, loved the breakfast, loved the location. Only downside to me was that the bathroom was small, but a very minor inconvenience, but might be a problem if someone is quite large in girth.

If you walk down the Via Purificazione, you can pick up a taxi in front of the Bernini Bristol Hotel in the Piazza Barberini. There are lines of them at the front door. There is also a Metro stop in the Piazza Barberini.

Be careful at some of the shops and restaurants in this area. Many of them overcharge tourists and don't give back the correct change. Be especially careful at some of the takeaway food shops on the Via Sistina.
