Newquay

My wife and I plan to visit Newquay May 26-29. We'll fly and get a car. B&B suggestions, things to be sure to see?

Newquay is in a beautiful area of north Cornwall, but in my opinion is one of the less attractive places to stay (unless you are a surfer or under 20 years old, I guess!). It has been allowed to develop (sprawl) and there are many smaller places to stay which would give you a better experience. Eg Port Isaac, Padstow, St Ives, or one of the towns on the south coast. Much of Cornwall is accessible from Newquay airport within an hour or so drive.

What are your interests? Cornwall must be the most developed area for tourists in the country (I'm not criticising it - I visit at least once a year! I mean that everything that can be turned into an attraction is open - farms, industrial sites, museums, fishing trips etc etc). There are LOTS of gardens looking beautiful at the moment (not only the Eden project, though it is worth a visit!) many National Trust houses (e.g. Lanhydrock is lovely, see www.nationaltrust.org for the whole list), fantastic coastline and walks. Or go shopping for art-works in St Ives, and visit the Tate Modern branch there.

Did you mean Newquay in Cornwall or Newquay in Wales?

If we're talking about Newquay in Cornwall, I'd skip it. I went through on a bus in 1992, and it struck me as a tawdry seaside resort, a la Wildwood in NJ. St. Ives is nice, as well as the other towns mentioned above.

St Ives is really quaint. Wonderful lighting there, an artist colony. A side trip to St Michael's Mount was interesting. We stayed at the Porthminster Hotel, do not know of any B&Bs there.
