Okay - so got lovely, affordable accommodation in Augsburg (good train connections to Munich, etc).

So, after spending 4 days in the Munich area we will be off to Paris. I have 3 days and 2 nights open to travel. Any tips on where to stop/stay over/sight-see between the cities?

There's Strasbourg, of course, a stop on the Munich-Paris direct TGV high-speed train route. Book or check train times at www.bahn.de.

But personally I'd travel Munich-Paris direct (either by daytime TGV or overnight City Night Line sleeper, departs 2243 arrives 0923 next morning) and spend extra time in the Munich area visiting Salzburg and its citadel or Berchtesgaden and the Obersalzburg/Eagles Nest/Berghof WW2 site. Again, use www.bahn.de to find train times Munich-Salzburg or Munich-Berchtesgaden.

Strasbourg is an obvious must in my book. Other than that, it's best to decide whether you want to spend the extra day in Germany or in France.

Yes, you can travel by train from Munich to Lyon, but it will require making several connections. The best site for detailed timetables for most of Europe is www.bahn.de. Click on the drop-down flag menu for English. After you get summary timetables for Muenchen-Lyon, click on the arrow to the left of each departure time to see the connecting points.

No, forget Lyon. Strasbourg is far better.

Book Strasbourg-Paris up to three months in advance at www.tgv-europe.com to get a Prem's fare as low as 25 EUR. To keep the site in English and to prevent being bumped to the Rail Europe site which doesn't offer discount fares, choose Great Britain as your country of residence. If you get a Prem's fare, you can print the tickets yourself. If self-printing isn't an option, do NOT choose to have the tickets mailed to you unless you really do live in the UK.

kerouac - you say Strasbourg is better than Lyon. Are you referring to connections by train, or literally the cities and what there is to do, etc?

I am referring to the cities. Strasbourg is of a manageable size and has a unique atmosphere and splendid architecture. Lyon is nice, but it is "typically French" and just seems so much like so many other French cities.
