After considering a million alternatives, including the status quo and hoping for the best, I ended up changing our trip drastically.

Instead of our previous plan of arriving in Cologne and going to Hamburg, Copenhagen, and Berlin, I got cheap flights from Cologne to London (EasyJet and Germanwings). Amazingly there are still some left for mid-August. I know it's quite likely this strike will be resolved possibly even before it starts, but we now have a plan my daughter and I are both very happy with. She is very pleased to go to London again. Plus, we will have a couple full days in Cologne, and I still have a lot of things I want to see in that area.

I'm sure we'll revisit some version of the original trip plan on a future trip.
