As ever depends on your budget, where you want to stay and the time of year.

Palma the capital of the island is a nice compromise - it has an historic centre, some good restarants and shops. It also has the feel of a proper city rather than just being a tourist trap.

My favourite place to stay in Palma is somewhere on the Paseo Marítimo with a room overlooking the marina. The spanish hotel chain sol melia (www.solmelia.com) have a range of 4 and 5 star hotels all on the harbour front - prices vary considerably {I have never been able to figure out their pricing policy}. Also I have managed to get a better price on an individual hotel via expedia.com

PS if you do stay on the Paseo Maritimo, try and get a room that has a view of both the searfroant and the cathedral (the views at the back of all the seafront hotels are well unimpressive)
