Madrid Hotel for One Night
We'll be taking the train from Seville as early as feasible to get a full day in Madrid and stay 1 night before a 1pm flight to Atlanta.
Please help direct me to a neighborhood that would allow us to maximize our short stay in Madrid. We are a family of 5 so may need 2 rooms. I'd look for moderate price. Not cheapest - not luxury. I prefer a smaller hotel vs a giant tower but for 1 night I think location matters most.
We'll be traveling very light. My vision is that a quick walk from the train would be ideal. But if nearby train isn't desirable perhaps it's worth shifting. Other location consideration is heading ot airport next morning. I am happy that a 1pm flight ins't super early so we can enjoy a Madrid evening.

Getting to the airport is easy...taxi, flat rate 30 euros from central Madrid.
I would not stay near the train station...take a taxi( not expensive ) to an area close to Plaza Mayor or Santa Ana...

I think staying near the train station is a good idea, it's only one night and that isn't a bad area, unlike some cities. Also, makes it easy to get to the airport the next day. The Airport Express bus leaves from a stop right next to Atocha train station. Otherwise, maybe stay around Plaza Cibeles as there is an airport bus stop there, also. Now if you don't intend to do that, I guess then it really doesn't matter where you stay, does it, as long as it's central? I mean if you plan to take a taxi to the airport anyway.
But either way, I agree with you, you will save some time staying near Atocha.
I'd suggest the Hotel Mora. It's a good mid-level budget hotel right across from the botanic gardens and only a short walk from Atocha. It has less than 100 rooms, if that's small enough.

Check out the NH Atocha at Paseo Infanta Isabel, 9. The Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen Bornemisza museums are all within 15 minutes’ walk.
If you're a Marriott member, then check out the AC Hotel by Marriott Carlton Madrid at Paseo de las Delicias, 26.
The Vincci Soho Hotel, Calle del Prado, 18 ,or Hotel One Shot Prado 23, might work.

Just found an apartment that will allow 1 night. It's close to Plaza Mayor where we've booked an afternoon tour that starts from there.
Family of five was requiring 2 hotel rooms and I think we've got a good apartment....

A family of 5, no matter how you mix it, will require two taxis.
The bus is great, if you're not lugging around too much luggage and you don't mind standing the whole way out to the airport. The first stop for the bus at the airport is T4.

I think where to stay in Madrid depends on what you want to do with your limited time there. I stayed within what I considered walking distance (about 1 km) of the Atocha train station, right near the Prado, at the Hotel Lobe de Vega, now the Mercure Madrid Centro – nothing special, but it met my needs!
