Lisa, I am booked at the Goldener Stern in June in Luzern. Everything else was just too expensive. They responded very promptly and politely, so I'm going to try them. The Hotel Schweizerheim and the Hotel Alpenrose in Wengen are really nice.

Lisa -

We've stayed at the Hotel Bellevue in Wengen twice and can highly recommend it. It's run by a Swiss couple fluent in German, French and English. It's a small, moderately priced hotel located on a quiet hillside - a 10 minute uphill walk from the train station. The owners will collect you at the station in their electric car if you call when you arrive - there's a display of hotel listings and a free phone steps from the station.

If you choose to stay at the Bellevue, I'd suggest that you request a room with balcony facing the Jungfrau. The views are incredible.

This hotel is comfortable, peaceful and meticulously maintained. The nightly rate includes breakfast, and you can also opt for the half board (breakfast and dinner - good food). www.bellevue-wengen.ch.

In Zermatt, we usually stay at Hotel Biner, which I highly recommend, but it's not on your list. If interested, their site is www.hotel-biner-zermatt.ch.

We are just back from 2 weeks in Zermatt. We stayed next door to the albatros. It looks very nice. We considered staying there but ended up next door in a flat because we had a large family. You may email me with any questions about Zermatt. The albatros is up a slight hill but we loved the location, very convenient to town.

I've booked Hotel Biner for the first week in March. Our main concern is the location. On a map of the town it looks equidistant to both of the main lifts, and it appears to be a fairly short walk. Any feedback? Is this accurate?

Lisa,

We stayed at the Hotel Krone 2 summers ago. It was a beautiful building on the outside, located conveniently in the Weinmarkt square, and fairly plain and modern on the inside. It was very clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. There was a wonderful breakfast that's included in the price. All in all, a highly recommended budget hotel.

The only problem we had was figuring out how to unlock the door to the room. There was some odd trick to getting the door handle to turn and the instructions were printed ON THE INSIDE OF THE DOOR! We had 2 rooms and oddly enough when we figured out how to open one room up, the other room's door worked differently! Other than that snafu, we enjoyed our stay. Actually, it was pretty hysterical when the 4 of us kept taking turns to try to open the door. We were each convinced the other was just being uncoordinated and that we could, of course, open a door.

Enjoy your trip!

Susan

We stayed at Goldener Stern just this past September ('03). Like others, I wanted to find something clean, reasonably close in for a very moderate price (Switzerland is expensive to me!).

This is a nice little restaurant hotel just across the river, sort of diagonally behind the Jesuit Church. It is a very easy walk to the old town by crossing any of several bridges. We also walked to it from the train station (with very minimal luggage) - I believe my "mappy" estimate was 0.8km.

The woman at the front desk was warm and welcoming. There is a very small elevator but we usually took the stairs. I recall that the hotel desk was up one level from the street; you could enter from the front or backside of the building. There is no lobby for meeting anyone, but there is the dining room area.

Our room was a twin (2 beds - our preference) with duvets, armoire/cabinet/closet, desk, small lamps over head of beds, and a chair. The bathroom was a shower-only unit, sink & toilet. The window opened out over the pretty garden of the church across the street. The decor is very plain and utilitarian, but all was very clean and beds were comfortable.

The breakfast was a bread assortment, with coffee and juice. Maybe there was some cereal, I don't remember, but it was fine.

The only drawback we encountered was that we like a cool room so I left the window ajar a bit. The church across the street has a rather active belltower - it rings every quarter hour. Even at that, I slept soundly, however my husband said it bothered him some. I think if we had completely closed the window it would have muffled the sound sufficiently.

I would still recommend it as a clean hotel in a convenient location at a reasonable price (our room was 135 Sfr, incl breakfast, about $100 US). Just wanted to be fair about the assessment. I reserved online via the website form, and rec'd prompt emails from the hotel.

There is another 'budget' hotel in the old town that was recommended here - I will try to pull it up again and post here.

Message: We enjoyed the hotel below very much. Nice rooms located in old town right by river. Friendly staff, nice breakfast, and also has a very good Italian cafe as part of hotel.

Message: We used the Zum Weissen Kreuz, Furrengasse 19 in old town and were quite happy with it. It has nice rooms, a very nice breakfast service, and there is a really good Italian restuarant in the lower level (it is owned by Italian Swiss). The location is superb right in the heart of the old town and just on the river. Highly recommeded.

Hotel Biner is about a five minute walk from the train station, and a short walk to just about everything else in Zermatt, including the lifts. You can easily walk from the Biner to the opposite end of town in about 15 minutes, so I wouldn't be concerned one iota about distances.

We're headed to Zermatt later this week - not to ski, but to do some winter hiking.

Have a great time.

In Wengen we stayed at the Falken. Just at the edge of the village with nice mtn. views. Rooms are basic, but clean, and staff extremely friendly. Would definitely stay there again.
