Even though it's Switzerland; try not to be neutral about this city question

Before Italy in late September, we will be spending some time in Switzerland. As a base to explore the region, including hikes and the Jungfraujoch, which city would you set up your base...Grindelwald, Murren, Interlaken, other? If you have a hotel recommendation ($100 - $150 range), that would be great, too. Right now, I am leaning toward Grindelwald because I spent an afternoon there 16 years ago, but I'm not definite about it. Eigerately appreciate your peak response (lame attempt at mountain humor, I admit).

We've always enjoyed Murren. Easy to get to (via public transportation) lots of hiking and photo ops. with the Shilthorn being the most obvious. Hotel Alpenblick at: [email protected] is our favorite hotel about $120 for a double room w/breakfast (back in 1999). Interlaken gives you easy access to both Murren and Grindlewald and, of course, both lakes. Actually, I think you would be happy in any one of your choices if you want outdoor activies. Nightlife would be more active in Interlaken, but if you want to slow down and sleep at night, Grindelwald or Murren or, for that matter, Lauderbrunnen, would be the better choice.

How about Wengen? The Hotel Eiger is very nice with half board it's in the 100-150 range. The train station is right there. You can hike up to Kl.Scheidegg or take the train and continue up to the Jungfrau station.Wengen is very pretty and there are no cars.

Hi maitaitom,

I second hunter's suggestion of Wengen. Wengen is a little easier to get to than Muerren and a little more remote than Grindelwald, so to me it's the perfect mix. It's smaller than Grindelwald so it'll have fewer choices for restaurants, etc. But I think it's prettier! Many people on this board like the Alpenrose in Wengen.

I strongly urge you not to stay in Interlaken. It's a small city and gives you only a remote view of the mountains.

I'm a big fan of the Alpina Hotel in Grindelwald. While at many hotels you wait to see if your room will have a nice view or not, at the Alpina all the rooms face the Eiger with clear spectacular views and all rooms have a pleasant large balcony for sitting there and enjoying the splendor. It is just a very short walk (uphill) from the train station.

It is a family run place with a good restaurant and great breakfast as well. Rooms are simply but nicely furnished.
