luzern in winter?

I have been a few times to luzern always between june and september and i fall in love with the town againand again. I love walking along the lake, watching the mountains and walking around the city center and it's small roads. I have booked to go again dec/jan, this time with my husband (he has never been to switzerland)but i do not know if it will be as alive in winter! Will it be snowing at that time? will i be able to see the mountains or will it be foggy? will the lake be frozen?

I have never seen so many posts about switzerland as today. Zermatt was mentioned in four alone. It's almost like they have all been penned by the same person...

Luzern is beautiful in any season. Of course the fog will be there and the days are shorter, but if you're lucky, you see a different Luzern when the bridges are covered with snow. We were lucky to have some sunshine to add to the excitement during the brisk walks we had from the cozy cafes & shops. Go in February for their fasnacht festival.

Hello Wilma,

I’ve only been to Luzern once, and that was in November. I’m returning again this November, so of course I think Luzern is lovely in winter! I think that if you love the lake and mountains and the small roads in summer, you’ll love them equally in winter.

As Was There says, Luzern has a different charm in winter with snowy bridges and crisp air that moves you into cozy cafes to share a coffee and cake with the locals. One of my best memories of my visit there was dining at the Hotel des Balances. They put me at a table just in front of the huge windows overlooking the River Reuss; the windows and the outside railing were ringed with a string of small white lights that added a soft glow to the scene. I sat there happily sipping wine and looking out at the shoppers ducking in and out of cafés and shops on the opposite bank.

So I think it will be magical. I second Was There’s suggestion to go for fasnacht.

s
A suggestion: try something else in Switzerland than Luzern. Admittedly it's nice etc., but there are other fantastic villages, places, etc. to try in the winter. And if you're concerned about snow (it's not guaranteed at the Luzern's low altitude), try: Arosa, a quaint village at ca. 1'600meters, about 2-3 hrs. from Zurich. Or Pontresina in the Engadin (at ca. 1'800meters; near the Silvaplana lake, and in one of the most beautiful areas of the country). A further hike from Zurich - 4-to-5 hours, but worth it.

Or other places of course. Check www.myswitzerland.com for other ideas. Hope you can get to explore another location than Luzern - believe me, it's worth it!

Luzern is wonderful in the winter. We have lived here for three years and really enjoy it. It is not usually to cold to enjoy. There may or may not be snow but there usually is in the mountains. Lots of people, though not lots of tourists. January is sale time so the city is usually very busy.

The weather is variable. You will have many foggy days, but those that are clear are like crystal. If the weather doesn't clear for you, you can usually get out of the fog by heading up the Engleberg. And finally, No, the lake will not be frozen.

Second the rec on Fasnacht. This year it is at the end of Feb. This is the main time when the Swiss let their hair down...even college Spring Break doesn't compare to it! Parades, out of tune music (on purpose) Gluhwine and Grog etc...It is a 24 hour, week long street party!
Cheers,
Jan

I 3rd the suggestion of Faschnacht. It is wonderful!! Large groups in matching costumes, parade, etc. But not the drunken brawl that Mardi Gras in New Orleans is - much, much better.
