The lowest I found for October was on Alitalia. Newark to Rome; Milan to Newark. Both legs on a weekend. The price was $631. There was a slightly less expensive fare on Continental but it involved a 5-hour layover in Amsterdam.
You don't say where your friend will be leaving from. That makes a difference in airfare.
Search the internet on cheaptickets or expedia or orbitz web sites. That would be a starting point. You can find deals if your friend is willing to fly mid week and do intermediate stops, rather than non-stop to Rome.

Our tickets to rome came from www.cheapseats.com. They were several hundreds of dollars less than travelocity, orbitz, etc.

I got an incredible fare of $401 from NY to Rome for early October from autoeurope (www.autoeurope.com). Originally I was finding fares in the $600 range, but when I changed my return from Sunday to Monday, my fare dropped to $401. Good luck!
