airfare from usa to rome
hi fodorites -
i'm hunting around for airfare from nyc to rome for last week of august. i realize it's high season but damn, airfare is super expensive! i'm seeing prices no less than $1400 per person. if you have airfare for around that time from usa to rome, how much did you pay per person if you don't mind me asking? just looking for a a reasonable range so i don't get ripped off too much. thanks!

I paid that much in May (to Naples) so I am not surprised. I am watching Rome airfare for October and it looks like 1000 will be the benchmark, so higher fares are here for the time being--and summer is always highest.
Let people know where you are flying from and they might be able to offer some tips. Otherwise, just plug into kayak, etc., and see what happens.

Booked RT flights for two from East Coast US to Rome (with return 3 weeks later from Barcelona) for a little over $2800 (total) and that was LAST SEPTEMBER. And at that time it was more than $1000 than anything else I could find.
There are, IMO, NO TIPS to be given other than going somewhere like Kayak.com and looking at all the possibilities from every airport within reach.

We got Alitalia tickets from LA to Naples for late August for a little over $1300. We were thinking of flying to NY to visit family and friends before flying to Europe, but as you said, the rates were high and comparable to flying from California. Good luck!

On the spur of the moment booked tix New York (JFK) to Rome on Aer Lingus with a stop in Dublin for 788. 00 per person for the second week in October. I Know this is not your time period, but give them a try. Good luck.

Some people haven't cared for Air Berlin.

Finnair seems to have the best prices ($1108) JFK/FCO last week of Aug. In Sept., I see fares in the $900 range.

Finnair flies you via Helsinki, fine if you want to stop off for a few days, but sort of like flying Rome-New York via San Antonio.
Aer Lingus is pretty well beating everyone these days. Dublin is not a great place to transit but the transatlantic portion is very brief. We will probably take them again but spend a few days in Ireland on the way to or from. Food horrible, must pay for alcohol. Staff and planes fine, entertainment excellent.

We had a good trip and good service with air Berlin. the in flight meal was better than average and free wine was nice. The flight from Milan to Dusseldorf was delayed and they held the flight to JFK for the 10-15 or so of us that were flying home. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again .

Thanks ky.
We flew Aer Lingus last year from JFK to Rome and had no problems, except for in Dublin while changing planes. We bought something to eat and were charged in dollars despite saying we wanted to pay in euros. The flights were fine and cost $900 for June. I checked them this year and they were a lot more for our timing.
I haven't had free alcohol on an overseas flight in a long time. I guess I'll be checking that out on Air Berlin..

Flying on AirBerlin from JFK to Zurich in September. Good to know about your trip. I had flown them from Paris to Vienna but never for a long haul.
A couple of things that I did was actually search European sites for tickets. It was how I stumbled onto AirBerlin from the US. They don't fly from my home airport, so I am taking Jet Blue to JFK. When "pre-determined route" flights to Zurich were ranging in the $1400 range (Expedia, HotWire, Orbitz, etc), I got Jet Blue for $200 and AirBerlin for $800. While the flights are not "connected", the savings was worth it to me. You don't always have to purchase the "pre-determined" flight options.

thanks for the suggestions. i checked out aer lingus and air berlin. prices were pretty good but problem is it's all to/from jfk. i live near newark so it would make most sense to go through newark airport.
i found this: newark to rome, venice to newark
$1132 per person. this is the best i could find so far.
