But it's trouser suits rather than the US pants suits, isn't it?
I report the extreme amusement of UK friends in response to overheard conversation amongst US shop girls:
"What are you wearing tonight?"
"Pants."
Sotto voce English response, "Well, I should certainly hope so!"
Obviously, advertising and television are trying to blur all of us into one language, but I think, cathies, that the distinction still exists, at least among some of us.

Looking smart is a function of what you bring - not how much (within reason).
I must admit I do not attempt to make extended trips without taking clothes appropriate for going out in the evening (concert, ballet or upscale restaurant) - but I don't haul a body bag either.
Key is a few matching/toning colors - a lot of black or navy if you prefer for summer (but I do black) with lightweight and easily package fabrics. Also not taking too many shoes or things you can wear only once. The only thing I take enough of for the whole trip is panties - but they take up so little room it doesn;t matter.
Take a total of 3 pairs of shoes - wear the sturdiest on the plane, another pair of comfy walking shoes and one pair of either cute flats or wedges (heels are hell on cobblestones) for evening. I take - depending on length of trip 3 or 4 evening outfits - typically silk separates - pants, skirt and a couple of tops to mix and match. For day I do thin cotton knots and non crushable linen - with mostly dark pants/capris (no jeans - too heavy) and a mix of tops in a variety of colors. Plus a tissue weight rain jacket with hood and a sturdy folding umbrella.
Everything fits easily in a 25" wheelie and I have a small carry-on with toiletries, guidebooks, camera and one change of clothes just in case.
