Long Layover at Rome Airport
There is no getting away from it.. We have a 2:45 p.m. flight from rome to Zurich.. we most likely will have a 3-4 hour waiting period..WHAT CAN WE DO..can we store our luggage and walk around (yes, we will have the min. of four to six pieces)

If you have 4 hours, you can easily go to Ostia Antica. If this interests you, you can probably find a lot of information about doing it from the airport. It is close to FCO.
I might consider hiring a driver for a couple of hours, to meet me at the airport, take me to Ostia Antica, and bring me back.
There are probably cheaper ways to do it, but that sounds like fun to me.

Not sure I get the whole picture. If you are connecting through Rome can't you check your bags all the way through to ZHR? That would leave you with only your carryon to take care of. I don't know if there is any kind of storage there.
3-4 hrs is enough time to hop a local train to Ostia Antica, or take a cab to the beach at Fiumicino, or just hang out at the airport - isn't that fun.

plus is it 3-4 hours form landing to takeoff? For ex you arrive at 7 AM leave again at 2:40 so you would have 3-4 hours to leave; or 3-4 hours total including re-check at security?
Personally 3-4 hours at a foreign airport is not enough for me to want to leave the airport unless i have a car and driver .

There are no local trains from FCO to Ostia Antica; they are on completely different lines.
I've never used it, but luggage storage at FCO is a manned storage area, not lockers, and it may be time-consuming to deposit and pick up luggage.
Without a car and driver, I would not leave the airport either.

Probably your best bet is to have on hand a good book, crossword, Sudoku, etc., grab a cappucino and make yourselves comfortable. Taxi fares to/from FCO are outrageous and there is little to see/do in the town. With only 3-4 hours between flights, I personally wouldn't leave the airport, even with a car and driver.
