London for 2 months

We are thrilled to be going to London for 2 months (June/July)while my husband works on a project there. My 15 year old daughter is interested in taking some short fun classes while there- baking, tennis...any suggestions?

For tennis you might want to try David Lloyd leisure centres. There are several around the London area (e.g Fulham, Raynes Park). Although it is a members club they do offer lessons for non-members. www.davidlloydleisure.co.uk

You might also want to contact the LTA (governing body of British tennis) for info about courses and clubs. www.lta.org.uk

Take a look at PGL who offer activity holidays and camps for up to 17 yr olds. www.pgl.co.uk

Finally some private schools, especially outside or on the outskirts of London offer holiday activity courses. ISCIS lists schools by area. www.iscis.uk.net.

Enjoy your time in London!

How about riding? There's a stable in Hyde Park. I also found this website that lists a bunch of camps with various activities. There's even a list of camps for Moms. Have fun.

"The Institute, Central Square, Hampstead Garden Suburb" offers millions of courses, also a leafy upmarket area for one to observe as a tourist.

Leith's - a cookery school, they may offer short courses.

If your daughter is willing to learn alongside adults, then there are lots more opportunities available to her.

Many/most London boroughs have a extensive adult education programme. There are courses for everything - from picture framing, to languages, to cookery (but maybe not tennis). When you know where you will be living call the Council Offices and ask.

Hi! Tell me, what sort of things is your daughter into? Is she quite a mature 15 or still quite young? It makes quite a differece with regard to what to do - personally, at that age, I'd probably have been booking onto a course at Vinopolis - history of wine and wine-tasting! - so I don't want to be responsible for leading your daughter astray!) If you let me know either in reply here or via email at [email protected], I'll then do some research for you. I have some friends with daughters the same age so they may know of available courses etc.

Wait till you find out where you will be living, then get a copy of Floodlight. This is a magazine that will give you details of courses. Also try Time Out magazine for classfied ads and just keep your eyes peeled on the web and in local press for courses that take your fancy.
If you fancy a language course, try Goethe (German), Institut Francais, Alliance Francaise, Istituto Italiano or SOAS (for Asian and African languages). All do intensive summer courses and are very well thought of.
If you are gym bunnies, you could join Cannons gym for a 6 week membership of £75. These are good gyms, many with pools, and with good staff. Branches in Covent Garden, Cannon Street, Paddington and Oxford Circus. (C Garden is easy to get to - the Tube is 2 min. walk away. Likewise Cannon St.)

Have a look at http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/
The Human Body day looks interesting.
Also try the Natural History Museum, and maybe the British Museum; they might have short courses or seminars too.
And do take her to a Shakespeare play at the Open Air Theatre in Regents Park. One of my favorite London summer activities!
