College in London serves as hotel
There is a college in a posh area of London that offers its rooms for tourists during the summer period. I forgot its name. If anyone knows it,or if you know of another similar college in London, or if you stayed in one of them, please drop a line. Thank you all.

Student halls of residence in London
for summer accommodation
There must be 20 or 30 halls of residence, and they offer good value. In over half the rooms you go to a bathroom along the corridor, as few student halls have them en suite. Also, you probably want to select a place in town, in easy reach of the West End and City. For that you should find the name of the closest tube station, then check that station on the tube map at http://www.afn.org/~alplatt/tube.html/ or
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/pdfdocs/colormap.pdf/. Or you may want to include sitting reading in beautiful gardens during your stay, so want a place in the suburbs, such as Hampstead, Kingston, or Greenwich. I used Google, looked for the best-placed and most likely-looking sites, and offer this list for you to chose from. I think (but am not sure) that you need to e-mail a week beforehand for a booking.

University College of London also offers accomodations. They offer about 7 different halls to stay at. You can email them for a brochure at [email protected]

I think they are connected with venuemasters as well.

Let me recommend a brief, non-commercial guide to this and other kinds of budget lodgings in London:
http://victorianresearch.org/trip.html#stay There a small section, with links, on university accomodations, which vary widely in price and comfort.
(The site also features great advice from our own Ben Haines, and his list of free London lectures. Scroll down to "Fun Stuff".)
I've stayed at Imperial College a couple of times: the cheapest rooms are small, worn, and very spare, the showers are few and uncomfortable, and you usually have to walk a bit to get to breakfast. But the kids working the desk are nice, there's a cheap snack place nearby, and you can't beat the price. If you're travelling with someone else, Imperial also has a "mews" -- a coach-house -- with two bedrooms and a little kitchen that's pretty nice, and the rate's not bad.

Running a search on cheap places to stay to help a friend in his quest for inexpensive last minute accommadations in greater London and came upon this thread. I suspect many of the college accommadations book well in advance, however it's always worth a try. Since I've been compiling a list of other websites to seek out, thought I'd share >>>

Also,
Good site for free map info:

Useful London route planner:

(covers most forms of public transport - buses/tube/trams/)
Anyone who can provide feedback on a stay in one of the college residences mentioned in this thread?

I lived in a dorm for 1 year that belongs to University College of London 11yrs ago when I was a student there. It was in Bloomsbury which is an excellent location. The dorm rooms are sparse but fine, not much different from dorm rooms in the US. There are no private bathrooms, and there is a communal kitchen with a stove, fridge, and a microwave. There is no A/C however, which is a consideration for summer travelers.
