Lake Como: Bellaggio, Varenna, Menaggio

I'm planning to go to Lake Como from Milan for one day. Would like to see the most interesting points in this area as best as I can.

Which of these would offer the most for the day and how much can one cover? My wife and I really enjoy great views, shops and the usual things one likes to see when visiting someplace new.

Appreciate your comments.

Bob

Will you have a car or do you plan to travel to Como by train and then do everything by boat/hydrofoil. Also when are you going and do you like gardens?

Varenna is beautiful and small. A great place to sit at the end of the day and have an outdoor dinner. Bellagio will offer shopping and more action/hotels. You can easily do both as there is a ferry that runs between the 2 every hour and the crossing is like 15 minutes.

I totally agree with the previous posters about Bellagio and Varenna. A followup question, as they mentioned, how are you getting there?

Thx for the feedback. We plan on taking the train from Milan to Varenna & ultimately the ferry to Bellaggio.

We may come back the same way. But we're considering the hydrofoil to Como from Bellaggio and then the train from Como back to Milan.

Bob

Bob, smart travel plans, i.e., returning via a different route. This way, you'll get a chance to see the lake and also a bit of the city of Como. One suggestion: Take the faster boat from Bellagio to Como. It makes only 3 stops and take 45 minutes. The other one takes 2 hours.
