Lake Como Hotel

Would appreciate a recommendation for a 130E +/- hotel within walking distance of the train station. I have been there before but it has been a while. I am assuming that the train station is in the center of town as we will be walking. Thanks for your help.

Please clarify which TOWN on Lake Como you are talking about. Are you speaking of the CITY of Como itself or somewhere else such as Varenna?

Como is a big lake. Are you talking about the town of Como? People often stay midlake in Bellagio or Varenna. To get to Bellagio, you take the train to Varenna, walk downhill for a few minutes and catch the ferry to Bellagio. (Or you can take a hydrofoil from Como to Bellagio.)

Once you've settled the location, you might look at www.tripadvisor.com for travelers' reviews of hotels.

There are two railway stations - the Ferrovie Nord station (does not show on Trenitalia site - is a separate railway system) and the FS station, Como S. Giovanni.

Assuming you mean Como S. Giovanni, it's on the side of the hill, not too far from the lake, but not in the center. It's probably about 1/2 to 3/4 mile walk to the center.

In May 2006, I spent one night at Hotel Tre Re in the central area. It is in your price range, was perfectly fine, and I would recommend it:

Actually just booked at In Riva Al Lago. My daughter and I stayed there in 2001 and although the outside was a bit scarry the rooms were great. Newly redone with huge bathrooms. 55E per for a double. Does not include breakfast and must be in cash.
