The area around Berchestgarden (sp?) is just beautiful. This area is about no more than 30 minutes from Salzburg.
The whole area along the border between Austria and Germany is to die for. Salzburg is a great city. One of my favorites. It is small enough to see it easily; it is clean and upscale yet quaint.
Enjoy!

I've been to both Kandersteg, CH and Salzburg. I was only in Salzburg for unfortunatley, 1 day on a whirlwind tour..I love mountainious towns, lots of Geraniums and an occasional castle or church to be toured. I understand there are not many castles in Switzerland?! Anyway, I've never drove from Berneroberland region to Salzerburgerland (SP?). Thanks for the reply and for not "topping" me (whatever that means)

Kerrilynn,
"Topping" is a good thing.....it's a way of bringing your message back to the top of the list on the left hand-side so that it doesn't disappear as more & more questions are posted.
I tried to help by suggesting on your earlier message that you re-post with a different title & also by topping both messages.
Jim

Hi kerrilynn,
O my goodness, there are **tons** of castles in Switzerland. And, being Swiss, there is a website to help you find them: http://www.swisscastles.ch/castles.htm
Do you know your driving route? Are you going by highway or secondary roads? I was going to suggest you stop in Scuol, but when I tried your route in mappy.com, they routed the journey north, near Spiez & Thun (both have castles and both worth a stop, btw!). Anyway, I rarely drive in Switzerland so am route-challenged; if you tell us what towns you'll be going by, maybe we can tell you which ones we've liked.

Please give us more information, kerrilynn! Do you want to do the driving in one day or do you think a stop for a night would be possible? It is quite a difference between Kandersteg and Salzburg. Doing this drive in one day means you would not be able to see anything.
As S pointed out, there are *many* castles in Switzerland. It depends on your route. The quickest route goes via Zurich, St. Gallen, Lindau, Munich. The most scenic route is definitely through the Alps, over some passes. In the latter case a stop in Scuol would indeed be perfect incl. a visit of castle Tarasp.

Thank you for the replys. I plane to take 2-3 days to get to Salzburg and just wanted to sleep where I land. I'm going the latter part of March so hopefully there will be lots of "vacancy" signs. While looking at a map the other night I thought North towards Innsbruck, East towards Kitsbuhl and continuing to Berchesrgarten and Salzburg would be beautiful. I was going to stay in Northern Switzerland enrt to Austria and only hit Germany on out way to the airport in Munich. Thanks for all you help. Jim, sorry for the "dis" on the topper, this is my first time on here and didn't know what it meant. Thanks

Hi kerrilyn,
I'm sorry, but this is still too vague for me to be able to help . . . (maybe some others will see this and be able to help . . .).
Can you go to one of the mapping sites (www.mappy.com or www.viamichelin.com), take a look at their routes, select one for planning/dreaming purposes, and then tell us about that route? We may have better suggestions with that information.
