Salzburg or Graz?
Hi
Would love some help deciding between Salzburg and Graz for a side trip from Vienna. We'd probably do a day trip via train to Graz, vs. a flight for an overnight in Salzburg. The travel times and prices are close enough to seem not to be a factor. We love walking around and looking at buildings; that's pretty much what we do with our day. Which city would you say impressed you more?
Thanks for any advice

Haven't been to Salzburg - not being a Mozart or Sound of Music fan I've chosen Innsbruck instead - but I very much liked Graz. Hope to go back some day. Photos might help: http://kwilhelm.smugmug.com/Travel/E...z-and-Kufstein

I have been to both. They both have beautiful, walkable Old Towns. Personally, I preferred Salzburg (although I would stay clear of the Sound of Music Tour). I thought Salzburg was friendlier, and also I am a big Mozart fan.
You will prefer Salzburg if you love classical music, particularly Mozart. But since you like looking at buildings, you might enjoy Graz even more with its unusual mix of old medieval charm and space age architecture (like the Kunsthaus). One more thought, Salzburg is definitely more touristy if that is a factor for you.

No need to consider flying Vienna -to Salzburg -
Frequent train service Vienna- Salzburg 2 3/4 hours
www.oebb.at
www.westbahn.at
less expensive than to Graz +- and only 15 minutes more time.
Salzburg - overall more to see and do- easy walking as much in the " Old Town " much more impressive from the Fortress high above - to the beautiful gardens and palaces.
