Italy travelers -- got advice for my 13 day trip to Italy

Jean is right about some places being closed in October, however in our experience, enough will be open to make it a nice visit.
My suggestion is to cut out Venice (that is, save it for the next trip and do it justice), and stay in Como after Florence.
Then take a 4+ hour train ride directly to Zurich, or directly to Zurich airport. You will have to change trains at least once, but there are connections with only one change.
Again, at what hour is your return flight?

sssteve, are you recommending Como town or Lake Como in general? Most of us prefer the towns midlake to the town of Como. But I don't know what they're like in late October. I would assume things are closing down after the high season.
